Hadith of Abu Waqqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ (١)، ، ٢١٨٩٦ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ سَأَلَ أَبَا وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ: بِمَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْعِيدِ؟ قَالَ: " كَانَ يَقْرَأُ (١) بِـ (قَ) وَ (اقْتَرَبَتْ) " (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Abdullah that Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Abu Waqid Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him): From where did the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) recite in the Eid prayer? He replied: From Surah Qaf and Surah Qamar.

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الدُّؤَلِيِّ ثُمَّ الْجُنْدَعِيِّ، (١) عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ: أَنَّهُمْ خَرَجُوا عَنْ مَكَّةَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ لِلْكُفَّارِ سِدْرَةٌ يَعْكُفُونَ عِنْدَهَا، وَيُعَلِّقُونَ بِهَا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ، يُقَالُ لَهَا: ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ، قَالَ: فَمَرَرْنَا بِسِدْرَةٍ خَضْرَاءَ عَظِيمَةٍ، قَالَ: فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اجْعَلْ لَنَا ذَاتَ أَنْوَاطٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " قُلْتُمْ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ مُوسَى: {اجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةً قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ}، ، [الأعراف: ١٣٨] إِنَّهَا السُّنَنُ، (١) لَتَرْكَبُنَّ سُنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ سُنَّةً سُنَّةً " (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he set out with the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) from Makkah Mukarramah towards Hunain. There was a berry tree of the disbelievers where they used to stop and hang their weapons, and it was called "Dhat Anwat." On the way, we passed by a great garden of lush and flourishing berry trees, so we said, "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint for us also a 'Dhat Anwat' just like they have." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you have said the same thing as the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Appoint for us a god just as they have gods.' And Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'You are a people who are ignorant.' Remember! You will surely follow the footsteps of those before you, and you will adopt their every habit."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ حَسَّانَ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّا بِأَرْضٍ تُصِيبُنَا بِهَا مَخْمَصَةٌ، فَمَا يَحِلُّ لَنَا مِنَ الْمَيْتَةِ؟ قَالَ: " إِذَا لَمْ تَصْطَبِحُوا، وَلَمْ تَغْتَبِقُوا، وَلَمْ تَحْتَفِئُوا بَقْلًا، فَشَأْنُكُمْ بِهَا " (١)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of the Messenger, "O Messenger of Allah! In the area where we live, we often face situations of necessity, so how much of the dead animal is permissible for us?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If you are unable to find any vegetable to pick at any time, morning or evening, then you are permitted (to eat from it)."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، وَابْنُ بَكْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، قَالَ: عُدْنَا أَبَا وَاقِدٍ الْبَكْرِيَّ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ بَكْرٍ: الْبَدْرِيَّ (١) ، فِي وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ، فَسَمِعَهُ يَقُولُ: " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَفَّ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً، ، عَلَى النَّاسِ، وَأَطْوَلَ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً لِنَفْسِهِ " (١)، ،

Nafi’ bin Sarjas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that we went to visit Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) during his final illness, so I heard him saying that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) would lead the people in prayer with the lightest (shortest) prayer, but when he prayed alone, he would perform the longest prayer. ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الدِّيلِيِّ (١) ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: خَرَجَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قِبَلَ حُنَيْنٍ، فَمَرَرْنَا بِسِدْرَةٍ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، اجْعَلْ لَنَا هَذِهِ ذَاتَ أَنْوَاطٍ كَمَا لِلْكُفَّارِ ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ، وَكَانَ الْكُفَّارُ يَنُوطُونَ سِلَاحَهُمْ بِسِدْرَةٍ، وَيَعْكُفُونَ حَوْلَهَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، هَذَا كَمَا قَالَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ لِمُوسَى: {اجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةً} [الأعراف: ١٣٨] إِنَّكُمْ تَرْكَبُونَ سُنَنَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ " (٢)، ،

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ (٣) بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الدُّؤَلِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ، فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَى حَدِيثِ مَعْمَرٍ، وَمَعْمَرٌ أَتَمُّ حَدِيثًا (٤)، ،

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْمَعْنَى، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، فِي حَدِيثِهِ: حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَبِهَا نَاسٌ يَعْمِدُونَ إِلَى أَلْيَاتِ الْغَنَمِ وَأَسْنِمَةِ الْإِبِلِ فَيَجُبُّونَهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَا قُطِعَ مِنَ الْبَهِيمَةِ وَهِيَ حَيَّةٌ، فَهُوَ (١) مَيْتَةٌ " (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, there were some people there who used to cut off the rumps of goats and the humps of camels. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whatever part of the animal is cut off from a living animal, it is considered carrion (dead meat)."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يَجُبُّونَ أَسْنِمَةَ الْإِبِلِ، وَيَقْطَعُونَ أَلْيَاتِ الْغَنَمِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَا قُطِعَ مِنَ الْبَهِيمَةِ وَهِيَ حَيَّةٌ، فَهِيَ مَيْتَةٌ " (١)، ،

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ وَاقِدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِنِسَائِهِ فِي حَجَّتِهِ: " " هَذِهِ ثُمَّ ظُهُورَ الْحُصُرِ " " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to the pure wives on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage: "You are performing this Hajj with me; after this, you must remain in your homes."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنَّا نَأْتِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَيُحَدِّثُنَا فَقَالَ لَنَا ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ: " إِنَّ اللهَ قَالَ: إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا الْمَالَ لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَلَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ، لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ ثَانٍ، وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ، لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثٌ، وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ، ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when revelation would descend upon the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), we would present ourselves before him and the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) would recite to us that verse. Thus, one day we presented ourselves before the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), and he said: Allah Almighty has said, "We have sent down wealth so that prayer may be established and zakat may be given, and if the son of Adam were to have two valleys of gold and silver, he would desire a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust. However, whoever repents, Allah turns towards him."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْبٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ شَدَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي مُرَّةَ، أَنَّ أَبَا وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ، حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ مَرَّ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ، فَجَاءَ أَحَدُهُمْ، فَوَجَدَ فُرْجَةً فِي الْحَلْقَةِ، فَجَلَسَ وَجَلَسَ الْآخَرُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ، وَانْطَلَقَ الثَّالِثُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَبَرِ هَؤُلَاءِ النَّفَرِ؟ " قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " أَمَّا الَّذِي جَاءَ فَجَلَسَ فَأَوَى، فَآوَاهُ اللهُ، وَالَّذِي جَلَسَ مِنْ وَرَائِكُمْ فَاسْتَحْيَا،، ، فَاسْتَحْيَا اللهُ مِنْهُ، وَأَمَّا الَّذِي انْطَلَقَ، فَرَجُلٌ أَعْرَضَ، فَأَعْرَضَ اللهُ عَنْهُ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting with the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) when three men passed by. One of them came, saw a little space in the gathering of people, and sat there. The second sat at the back, and the third man went away. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Shall I not tell you about these people?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah!" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The person who came and sat here, he sought refuge and Allah gave him refuge. The one who sat at the back, he felt shy, so Allah was shy with him. And the one who went away, he turned away, so Allah turned away from him."

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، قَالَ: عُدْنَا أَبَا وَاقِدٍ الْكِنْدِيَّ، (١) فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ، قَالَ: " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَفَّ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً بِالنَّاسِ، وَأَطْوَلَ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً لِنَفْسِهِ " (٢)،

Nafi' bin Sarjas, may Allah have mercy on him, says that we went to visit Waqid, may Allah be pleased with him, during his final illness, so I heard him saying that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, would lead the people in prayer with the lightest (shortest) prayer, but when he prayed alone, he would perform the longest prayer. حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، وَابْنُ بَكْرٍ، قَالَا: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، قَالَ: عُدْنَا أَبَا وَاقِدٍ الْكِنْدِيَّ، قَالَ ابْنُ بَكْرٍ: الْبَدْرِيَّ، فِي وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ (٣)،

Yazid ibn Harun and Ya'la narrated to us, they said: 'Abd al-Malik narrated to us from Abu al-Zubayr from Safwan. Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah said: and he mentioned it.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النُّوشَجَانِ وَهُوَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ السُّوَيْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِأَزْوَاجِهِ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ: " " هَذِهِ، ثُمَّ ظُهُورَ الْحُصُرِ " " (٤)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to the pure wives: "You are performing this Hajj with me; after this, you must remain in your homes."

حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، وَسُرَيْجٌ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا فُلَيْحٌ، عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، قَالَ: سَأَلَنِي عُمَرُ عَمَّا قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعِيدَيْنِ؟، قَالَ سُرَيْجٌ: بِمَ قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْخُرُوجِ؟، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: " قَرَأَ: اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ وَق وَالْقُرْآنِ الْمَجِيدِ " (١)، ،

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ (١) ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعُ بْنُ سَرْجِسَ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، صَاحِبِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَخَفَّ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً عَلَى النَّاسِ، وَأَدْوَمَهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ " (٢)، ،

Nafi' bin Sarjas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that we went to visit Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) during his final illness, and I heard him saying that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would lead the people in the lightest (shortest) prayer, but when he prayed alone, he would perform the longest prayer. ﷺ
