Chapter 1

Abdullah bin Buraidah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ubaidullah bin Ziyad had doubt about the existence of the Hawd al-Kawthar. He summoned Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). When he came, the companions of Ubaidullah said to him that the Amir has called you so that he may ask you about the Hawd al-Kawthar. Have you heard anything from the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding this? He replied: Yes! I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) mention it. Now, whoever denies it, may Allah not let him drink from this Hawd.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite between sixty to one hundred verses in the Fajr prayer.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a she-camel on which a man's belongings were loaded; it belonged to a slave-girl. When people began to walk between two mountains, the path became narrow. When she saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), she urged her mount to go faster and said, "O Allah! Curse be upon it." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Who is the owner of this slave-girl? There should not be any mount with us upon which is Allah's curse."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

Abu Minhal says that once I was present with my father in the company of Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). My father asked him, "Please tell us, how did the Prophet (ﷺ) offer the obligatory prayers?" He replied, "He used to offer the Zuhr prayer, which you call 'Ula,' when the sun had declined. He would offer the Asr prayer at such a time that when any one of us returned to his home in Madinah, the sun would still be visible. As for Maghrib, what he said about it I have forgotten. The Prophet (ﷺ) liked to delay the Isha prayer, and he did not like to sleep before it or to talk after it. After offering the Fajr prayer, he would finish at such a time that we could recognize the person sitting next to us, and in it, he would recite between sixty and a hundred verses."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of the Messenger, "O Messenger of Allah! Teach me something from which I may benefit." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Remove harmful things from the path of the Muslims."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the last days of his life, when any gathering would become lengthy, at the end, while standing up, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say: "Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik." On one occasion, one of us said, "We have never heard this phrase from you before?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "It is an expiation for the sins committed in the gathering."

Azraq bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the bank of a canal in the city of Ahwaz. He was holding the reins of his mount in his hand, and during this time, he began to pray. Suddenly, his animal started moving backward on its heels, and Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) also kept moving backward along with it. Seeing this, a man from among the Khawarij said, "O Allah! Disgrace this old man, how is he praying?" After finishing the prayer, he (Abu Barzah) said, "I heard what you said. I have participated in six, seven, or eight battles with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I have seen the Prophet's dealings and his leniencies. For me to take my animal back with me is easier and better than to leave it and let it run away to its place, causing me trouble." And Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed two rak'ahs of Asr prayer (because he was a traveler).

The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! Such and such people are not found among us." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But I find Julaibib missing. Search for him." The people searched for him and found him near seven men. Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed all seven of them and was later martyred himself. The Prophet (ﷺ) came and stood by him and said, "He has killed seven men, and then the polytheists martyred him. He is from me and I am from him." He repeated these words twice. Then, when he was lifted before the Prophet (ﷺ), the Prophet (ﷺ) lifted him with his own arms, and until the burial, the Prophet's two arms served as his funeral bier. The narrator did not mention the ritual washing (ghusl).

Abu Taloot says that when Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the presence of Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, he was extremely angry. I heard him saying, "I never thought that I would live to see the time when people would be born in a nation who would reproach me for being a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) and would say, 'Your Muhammadan is this lame person.' I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioning the Hawd (Pond) of Kawthar. Now, whoever denies it, may Allah not let him drink from its water."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) heard the voices of two men who were singing, and the first was responding to the second (supporting him), and he was saying: "May the bones of my dear friend always shine; he wrapped up the battle before it became prolonged so that he could find a grave." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Look, who are these two?" People informed him that they were such and such persons. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah! Send punishment upon them and hurl them into the fire of Hell."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not like sleeping before the Isha prayer and talking after it.

Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said three times: The rulers will be from among the Quraysh; when mercy is requested from them, they will show mercy; when they make a promise, they fulfill it; and when they judge, they judge with justice. And whoever does not do so, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all mankind.

Shareek bin Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I had a desire to meet a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who would narrate to me a hadith about the Khawarij. So, on the day of Arafah, I met Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) along with some of his companions. I said to him, "O Abu Barzah! If you heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say anything regarding the Khawarij, please narrate that hadith to us." He said, "I will narrate to you the hadith which my ears heard and my eyes saw. Once, some dinars came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) from somewhere, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was distributing them. There was a black man there whose hair was cut short, he was wearing two white garments, and there were marks of prostration between his eyes (on his forehead). He came before the Prophet (peace be upon him), but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not give him anything. He came from the right side, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not give him anything. He came from the left side and from behind, but still, he was not given anything. Seeing this, he said, 'By Allah, O Muhammad (peace be upon him), today, since you have been distributing, you have not done justice.' At this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) became extremely angry and said, 'By Allah! After me, you will not find anyone more just than me.' He repeated this sentence three times. Then he said, 'Some people will emerge from the east, and perhaps he is among them, and their appearance will be like this. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the prey. They will not return to it.' Saying this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his chest. Their sign will be shaving the head. These people will continue to emerge in every era until the last of them appears. When you see them, kill them." He said this three times. "And they are the worst of creation." He said this three times.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that Julaibib used to pass by women and entertain them. I told my wife that Julaibib should not come to you; if he comes, I will do such and such. It was the custom of the Ansar that they would not marry off any widow until they had informed the Prophet (ﷺ), to see if the Prophet (ﷺ) had any need for her. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said to an Ansari man, "Marry your daughter to me." He said, "What an honor, O Messenger of Allah! Very well." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I am not asking for her for myself." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Then for whom?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "For Julaibib." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! Let me consult the girl's mother." So he went to her mother and said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) is not proposing for himself, but for Julaibib." She immediately refused, saying, "By God! Not at all. Did the Prophet (ﷺ) not find anyone other than Julaibib? We have already refused such and such proposals." Meanwhile, the girl was listening from behind her veil. After mutual consultation, when the man was about to go and inform the Prophet (ﷺ), the girl said, "Will you reject the word of the Prophet (ﷺ)? If the Prophet (ﷺ) is pleased with this, then marry me." With this, she opened her parents' eyes, and they said, "You are right." So her father went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "If you are pleased with this marriage, then we are also pleased." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I am pleased." So the Prophet (ﷺ) married the girl to Julaibib. Not long after, there was an attack on the people of Madinah. Julaibib also went out mounted. When the battle was over, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked the people, "Do you find anyone missing?" The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! Such and such people are missing." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But I find Julaibib missing. Look for him." The people searched for him and found him among seven men. Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed all seven, and then he himself was martyred. The Prophet (ﷺ) came and stood by him and said, "He killed seven men, and then the polytheists martyred him. He is of me and I am of him." He repeated this phrase two or three times. Then, when he was lifted before the Prophet (ﷺ), the Prophet (ﷺ) lifted him with his own arms, and until the burial, the Prophet's two arms served as his funeral bier. The narrator did not mention the washing (ghusl).

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of the Messenger, "O Messenger of Allah! I do not know whether I will remain alive after your departure. Please teach me something from which I may benefit." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said several things which I forgot, and he said, "Remove harmful things from the path of Muslims."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day I went out walking and saw that the Prophet (ﷺ) had turned his face to one side. I thought perhaps he was going to relieve himself, so I turned aside to go away. The Prophet (ﷺ) saw me and gestured towards me. When I reached the Prophet (ﷺ), he took my hand and we both started walking together. Suddenly, we came near a man who was praying and performing many bowings and prostrations. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do you think he is a show-off?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (ﷺ) let go of my hand, brought both his palms together, raised them to the level of his shoulders and lowered them, and said three times, "Adopt the middle path for yourselves, because whoever is harsh in matters of religion becomes overwhelmed." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a she-camel on which a man's belongings were loaded; it belonged to a slave-girl. When people began to walk between two mountains, the path became narrow. When she saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), she urged her mount forward and said, "O Allah! Curse this (camel)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "There should not be any mount with us upon which is Allah's curse."

Azraq bin Qais, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I saw an elderly man who was by the side of a canal in the city of Ahwaz. He had the reins of his mount in his hand, and during this time he began to pray. Suddenly, his animal started to move backward on its heels, and he also kept moving backward with it. Seeing this, a man from among the Khawarij said, "O Allah! Disgrace this old man, how is he praying?" After finishing the prayer, he said, "I heard what you said. I have participated in six, seven, or eight expeditions with the Prophet (ﷺ), and I have seen the dealings and leniencies of the Prophet (ﷺ). For me to take my animal back with me is easier and better than leaving it so that it runs away to its place and causes me trouble." And Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed two rak'ahs of Asr prayer (because he was a traveler). When I looked, it was Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Minhal says that once I was present with my father in the company of Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). My father asked him, "Tell us, how did the Prophet (ﷺ) offer the obligatory prayers?" He replied, "He used to offer the Zuhr prayer, which you call 'Ula,' when the sun had declined. He would offer the Asr prayer at such a time that when any one of us returned to his home in Madinah, the sun would still be visible. Regarding Maghrib, what he said I have forgotten. And the Prophet (ﷺ) liked to delay the Isha prayer, and he did not like to sleep before it or to talk after it. And after offering the Fajr prayer, he would finish at such a time that we could recognize the person sitting next to us, and in it, he would recite between sixty and a hundred verses."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) sent a man to a tribe of the Arabs. Those people beat him and spoke ill to him. He returned to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) and complained about it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If you had gone to the people of Oman, they would neither have beaten you nor spoken ill to you."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) once said: O people who have believed with their tongues but faith has not entered their hearts! Do not backbite the Muslims and do not seek out their faults, for whoever seeks out their faults, Allah will seek out his faults, and whoever Allah seeks out his faults, He will disgrace him in his own home.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that I myself asked the Prophet (ﷺ), "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of a deed which I may continue to do." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Remove harmful things from the path, for this is charity for you."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Abd al-Uzza bin Khatal was clinging to the covering of the Ka'bah, it was I who killed him (by the order of the Prophet, peace be upon him), and on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (ﷺ) had said: "All people are safe except Abd al-Uzza bin Khatal."

And I also heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say that I will have a cistern whose distance will be as much as between Aylah and Sana'a, and its length and width will both be equal. Two streams from Paradise will flow into it, one of silver and the other of gold. Its water will be sweeter than honey, colder than ice, and whiter than milk. Whoever drinks its water once will not feel thirsty until he enters Paradise, and its cups will be as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Sayyar bin Salalah says that once I was present with my father in the company of Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). At that time, I had earrings in my ears and I was young. Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I thank Allah that I keep reproaching this tribe of Quraysh. Here, such and such a person fights for the sake of the world, meaning Abdul Malik bin Marwan, and he also mentioned Ibn Azraq. Then he said: Among this group, the most beloved to me is the one whose stomach is free from the wealth of Muslims and whose back is not burdened with their blood. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The rulers will be from the Quraysh. When mercy is sought from them, they will show mercy; when they make a promise, they will fulfill it; and when they judge, they will judge with justice.

Once, some dinars came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he was distributing them. There was a black man there whose hair was cut short, he was wearing two white garments, and there were marks of prostration between his eyes (on his forehead). He came before the Prophet (peace be upon him), but the Prophet did not give him anything. He came from the right side, but the Prophet did not give him anything. He came from the left side and from behind, but still the Prophet did not give him anything. They will leave the religion as an arrow leaves its prey; they will not return to it.' Saying this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his chest. 'Their sign will be shaving the head. These people will continue to emerge in every era until the last of them appears. When you see them, kill them.' He said this three times. 'And they are the worst of creation.' He said this three times.

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that Julaibib used to pass by women and entertain them. I had told my wife that Julaibib should not come to you; if he comes, I will do such and such. Let me consult the girl's mother." So he went to her mother and said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) is proposing marriage for your daughter." She said, "Very good, our eyes will be cooled." He said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) is not proposing for himself, but for Julaibib." She immediately refused, saying, "By God! Not under any circumstances. If the Prophet (ﷺ) is pleased with this, then marry me." With this, she opened her parents' eyes, and they said, "You are right." So her father went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "If you are pleased with this match, then we are also pleased." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I am pleased." So the Prophet (ﷺ) married the girl to Julaibib. Not long after, there was an attack on the people of Madinah. Julaibib also went out mounted. When the battle was over, people were asked, "Do you find anyone missing?" The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! Such and such people are missing." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But I find Julaibib missing. Look for him." The people searched for him and found him among seven men. Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed all seven, and then he himself was martyred. The Prophet (ﷺ) came and stood by him and said, "He killed seven men, then the polytheists martyred him. He is from me and I am from him." He repeated this sentence twice. Then, when he was lifted before the Prophet (ﷺ), the Prophet (ﷺ) lifted him in his arms, and until the burial, the Prophet's (ﷺ) arms were the bier for him. The narrator did not mention the washing (ghusl).

Sayyar Abu Minhal says that once I was present with my father in the company of Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). My father asked him, "Please tell us, how did the Prophet (ﷺ) perform the obligatory prayers?" He replied, "He would perform the Zuhr prayer when the sun had declined. He would perform the Asr prayer at such a time that when any one of us returned to his home in Madinah, the sun would still be visible. As for Maghrib, what he said about it I have forgotten. And the Prophet (ﷺ) liked to delay the Isha prayer, and he did not like to sleep before it nor to talk after it. And after performing the Fajr prayer, he would finish at such a time that we could recognize the person sitting next to us, and in it he would recite between sixty and one hundred verses."

It is narrated from Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the last days of his life, when any gathering would become lengthy, at the end, while standing up, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say: "Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik." Once, one of us said, "We have never heard this phrase from you before?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "This is an expiation for the sins committed in the gathering."

Abu Al-Wada'i says that once we were on a journey, and Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us. He said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: The seller and the buyer (the one who sells and the one who buys) have the option (to cancel the sale) as long as they do not separate from each other.
