Hadith of ‘Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ، ٢٠٥٤٠ - حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ صُهْبَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْخَذْفِ، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّهُ لَا يَنْكَأُ عَدُوًّا، وَلَا يَصِيدُ صَيْدًا، وَلَكِنَّهُ يَكْسِرُ السِّنَّ، وَيَفْقَأُ الْعَيْنَ " (١)،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade throwing pebbles at someone and said that by this neither the enemy is subdued nor any game can be caught; however, it can break a tooth and injure an eye.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، (٢) عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ،، ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَأَنْتُمْ فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ فَصَلُّوا، وَإِذَا حَضَرَتْ وَأَنْتُمْ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ فَلَا تُصَلُّوا، فَإِنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When the time for prayer comes and you are among a flock of goats, then perform the prayer; but if you are in a pen of camels, do not perform the prayer, because they are created from Satan (there is satanic nature in them).

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ، يَقُولُ: " قَرَأَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ فِي مَسِيرِهِ سُورَةَ الْفَتْحِ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ "، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: " نَزَلَتْ سُورَةُ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ فِي مَسِيرٍ لَهُ، فَجَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ وَهُوَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ "، قَالَ: " فَرَجَّعَ فِيهَا "، قَالَ: فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: " لَوْلَا أَنْ أَكْرَهَ أَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ لَحَكَيْتُ لَكُمْ قِرَاءَتَهُ "، (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) reciting the Holy Qur’an on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. If people had not gathered around me, I would have recited it to you in the manner of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah Al-Fath. Muawiyah bin Qurrah says that if I too did not fear people gathering around, I would have demonstrated before you the style described by Abdullah bin Mughaffal, showing how the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited.

حَدَّثَنَا شَبَابَةُ، وَأَبُو طَالِبِ بْنُ جَابَانَ الْقَارِئُ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، قَالَ ابْنُ جَابَانَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: آآ (١)،

Shababa and Abu Talib ibn Jaban al-Qari narrated to us, they said: Shu’bah narrated to us from Mu’awiyah ibn Qurrah from Abdullah ibn Mughaffal from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a hadith similar to this. Ibn Jaban said in his narration: "Ā Ā".

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، قَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ (٢) عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ لِمَنْ شَاءَ " (٣)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There is prayer between every two calls to prayer; whoever wishes may offer it."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو نَعَامَةَ،، ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ أَبُونَا إِذَا سَمِعَ أَحَدًا مِنَّا يَقُولُ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، يَقُولُ: إِهِي إِهِي، " صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ " (١)،

Yazid bin Abdullah says that if our father heard us reciting Bismillah aloud, he would say, "Refrain from this, for I have prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and both Caliphs, and I did not hear any of them reciting Bismillah aloud."

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيِّ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ، أَوْ عَنْ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، وَكَانَ أَحَدَ الرَّهْطِ الَّذِينَ نَزَلَتْ فِيهِمْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: {وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ} [التوبة: ٩٢] إِلَى آخِرِ، ، الْآيَةِ، قَالَ: إِنِّي لَآخِذٌ بِغُصْنٍ مِنْ أَغْصَانِ الشَّجَرَةِ أُظَلِّلُ (١) بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُمْ يُبَايِعُونَهُ، فَقَالُوا: نُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ، قَالَ: " لَا، وَلَكِنْ لَا تَفِرُّوا " (٢)،

Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrates, who was among those people regarding whom this verse was revealed, "And there is no blame upon those who, when they came to you for you to carry them..." He says that I was holding a branch of a tree so that it would provide shade for the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the companions were pledging allegiance to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in his service. They were saying, "We pledge allegiance to you unto death." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "No, only on the condition that you will not flee."

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ، وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا، فَاقْتُلُوا مِنْهَا كُلَّ أَسْوَدَ بَهِيمٍ " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If dogs were not a community among the communities, I would have ordered their extermination. Therefore, kill every extremely black dog.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يُحَدِّثُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ، لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا، فَاقْتُلُوا مِنْهَا كُلَّ أَسْوَدَ بَهِيمٍ "، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ مِمَّنْ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنِيهِ وَحَلَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُنْذُ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَلَقَدْ حَدَّثَنَا فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسِ (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If dogs were not a community among the communities, I would have ordered their extermination. Therefore, kill every extremely black dog.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ أَبِي رَائِطَةَ الْحَذَّاءُ التَّمِيمِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، أَوْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اللهَ اللهَ فِي أَصْحَابِي، اللهَ اللهَ فِي أَصْحَابِي، لَا تَتَّخِذُوهُمْ غَرَضًا بَعْدِي، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّهُمْ فَبِحُبِّي أَحَبَّهُمْ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَهُمْ فَبِبُغْضِي، ، أَبْغَضَهُمْ، وَمَنْ آذَاهُمْ فَقَدْ آذَانِي، وَمَنْ آذَانِي فَقَدْ آذَى اللهَ وَمَنْ آذَى اللهَ فَيُوشِكُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ "، (١)، •

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Fear Allah regarding my companions, do not make them a target of criticism after me. Whoever loves them, loves them because of my love, and whoever hates them, hates them because of his hatred for me. Whoever hurts them, hurts me, and whoever hurts me, hurts Allah. Allah will soon seize him.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ (٢) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ الْخَرَّازُ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي رَائِطَةَ، بِمِثْلِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ (٣)،

Abdullah ibn Awn al-Kharraz narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Ubaydah ibn Abi Ra'itah, with similar wording to this hadith.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، أَنَّ قَرِيبًا لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ خَذَفَ فَنَهَاهُ، وَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْخَذْفِ، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّهَا لَا تَصِيدُ صَيْدًا، وَلَا تَنْكَأُ عَدُوًّا، وَلَكِنَّهَا تَكْسِرُ السِّنَّ، وَتَفْقَأُ الْعَيْنَ "، قَالَ: فَعَادَ، فَقَالَ: " حَدَّثْتُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْهَا، ثُمَّ، ، عُدْتَ لَا أُكَلِّمُكَ أَبَدًا " (١)،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade throwing pebbles and said that by it neither the enemy is subdued nor can game be caught, but rather it breaks teeth and puts out eyes.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ، وَعَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " صَلُّوا قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " صَلُّوا قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ عِنْدَ الثَّالِثَةِ: " لِمَنْ شَاءَ " كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَهَا النَّاسُ سُنَّةً (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah Mazni that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Pray two rak'ahs before Maghrib." After a short while, he again said: "Pray two rak'ahs before Maghrib." When he said it a third time, he also said: "Whoever wishes may pray them," because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not like that people should consider it a Sunnah.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ الْمُزَنِيُّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " لَا تَغْلِبَنَّكُمُ الْأَعْرَابُ عَلَى اسْمِ صَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ "، قَالَ: " وَتَقُولُ الْأَعْرَابُ: هِيَ الْعِشَاءُ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah Muzani that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Let not the Bedouins overpower you regarding the name of the Maghrib prayer. The Bedouins used to call it the Isha prayer."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، وَعَفَّانُ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، قَالَ عَفَّانُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: أَخْبَرَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي نَعَامَةَ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ سَمِعَ ابْنَهُ يَقُولُ: اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْقَصْرَ الْأَبْيَضَ عَنْ يَمِينِ الْجَنَّةِ إِذَا دَخَلْتُهَا، فَقَالَ: يَا بُنَيَّ، سَلِ اللهَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَعُذْ بِهِ مِنَ النَّارِ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: "، ، يَكُونُ قَوْمٌ يَعْتَدُونَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَالطَّهُورِ " (١)،

Abdullah bin Mughaffal once heard his son making this supplication: "O Allah, I ask You for a white palace on the right side after entering Paradise." He said: "O my son, ask Allah only for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell, for I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say that there will be people in this Ummah who will exceed the limits in supplication and ablution."

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: " كُنَّا مُحَاصِرِي (٢) قَصْرَ خَيْبَرَ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ جِرَابًا فِيهِ شَحْمٌ، فَذَهَبْتُ آخُذُهُ، فَرَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ " (٣)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that during the siege of Khaybar, I found a leather container in which there was fat. I picked it up and tucked it under my arm. Suddenly, I noticed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was looking at me and smiling. At this, I felt ashamed.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الْخَفَّافُ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ سَعِيدٌ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ، فَأَخْبَرَنَا عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " إِذَا، يَعْنِي، أَدْرَكَتْكَ الصَّلَاةَ، وَأَنْتَ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ فَلَا تُصَلِّ، وَإِذَا، ، أَدْرَكَتْكَ فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ فَصَلِّ إِنْ شِئْتَ " (١)،

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كُرَيْزٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " لَا تُصَلُّوا فِي عَطَنِ الْإِبِلِ، فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْجِنِّ خُلِقَتْ، أَلَا تَرَوْنَ عُيُونَهَا وَهَيْئَتُهَا (٢) إِذَا نَفَرَتْ؟ وَصَلُّوا فِي مُرَاحِ الْغَنَمِ، فَإِنَّهَا هِيَ أَقْرَبُ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: Do not pray in the places of camels, for their creation is like that of the jinn; when they become startled, you do not see their eyes and flames. However, you may pray in the sheepfolds, for they are closer to mercy.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ أَبُو إِيَاسٍ: أَنْبَأَنَا، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْفَتْحِ "، قَالَ: فَقَرَأَ أَبُو إِيَاسٍ، ثُمَّ رَجَّعَ، وَقَالَ: " لَوْلَا أَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ لَقَرَأْتُ بِهَذَا اللَّحْنِ " (١)،

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ سَعِيدِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَايَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعَنِي أَبِي وَأَنَا أَقْرَأُ، {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة: ٢] ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ، قَالَ: " يَا بُنَيَّ إِيَّاكَ وَالْحَدَثَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ، فَإِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَخَلْفَ أَبِى بَكْرٍ، وَخَلْفَ عُمَرَ، وَعُثْمَانَ، فَكَانُوا لَا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، وَلَمْ أَرَ رَجُلًا قَطُّ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَدَثُ مِنْهُ " (٢)،

Abdullah bin Mughaffal says that if my father heard us reciting Bismillah aloud, he would say: "Refrain from this." Yazid says: "I have not seen any companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) who hated innovation as much as he did. Because I have prayed with the Prophet (ﷺ) and the three caliphs, and I did not hear any of them reciting Bismillah aloud."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسٌ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، قَالَ:، ، قَالَ ابْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ، بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ، بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ (١) لِمَنْ شَاءَ " (٢)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There is prayer between every two calls to prayer; whoever wishes may offer it."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسٌ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: رَأَى رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ يَخْذِفُ، فَقَالَ: " لَا تَخْذِفْ، فَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ الْخَذْفَ، أَوْ قَالَ: يَنْهَى عَنْهُ كَهْمَسٌ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ، فَإِنَّهَا لَا يُنْكَأُ بِهَا عَدُوٌّ، وَلَا يُصَادُ بِهَا صَيْدٌ، وَلَكِنَّهَا تَفْقَأُ الْعَيْنَ، وَتَكْسِرُ السِّنَّ "، ثُمَّ رَآهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَخْذِفُ، فَقَالَ أُخْبِرُكَ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْخَذْفِ، أَوْ يَكْرَهُهُ، ثُمَّ أَرَاكَ تَخْذِفُ لَا أُكَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَةً (٣) كَذَا، وَكَذَا (٤)،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that once he saw one of his companions throwing pebbles. He said to him, "Do not do this, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade anyone from throwing pebbles and said that neither can an enemy be subdued by it nor can any game be hunted by it. However, it can break a tooth or put out an eye." After some time, he again saw him throwing pebbles and said, "I narrated to you the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and yet I see you doing the same thing. From today onwards, I will not speak to you in this manner."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ، لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا، وَلَكِنْ اقْتُلُوا مِنْهَا كُلَّ أَسْوَدَ بَهِيمٍ " (٥)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If dogs were not a community (ummah) among the communities, I would have ordered their extermination. Therefore, kill every extremely black dog.

حَدَّثَنَا عَتَّابُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، حَدَّثَنِي أَشْعَثُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَبُولَ الرَّجُلُ فِي مُسْتَحَمِّهِ، فَإِنَّ عَامَّةَ الْوَسْوَاسِ مِنْهُ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade urinating in the bathhouse, because usually the disease of doubts (waswasah) originates from this.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَ: سَأَلَتُ الْحَسَنَ، عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَتَّخِذُ الْكَلْبَ فِي دَارِهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ اتَّخَذَ كَلْبًا نَقَصَ مِنْ أَجْرِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever keeps dogs at their place, their reward decreases by one qirat every day.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، وَبَهْزٌ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالَ بَهْزٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ قُرَّةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيَّ، قَالَ: " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ، يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفَتْحِ "، قَالَ: فَقَرَأَ ابْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ وَرَجَّعَ، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: " لَوْلَا النَّاسُ لَأَخَذْتُ لَكُمْ بِذَاكَ الَّذِي ذَكَرَهُ ابْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "، قَالَ بَهْزٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: أَوْ حَمَلَهُ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ، قَالَ: فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْفَتْحِ فَرَجَّعَ فِيهَا، قَالَ أَبُو إِيَاسٍ: " لَوْلَا أَنِّي أَخْشَى، أَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ، ، النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ لَرَجَّعْتُ كَمَا رَجَّعَ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the Holy Qur'an on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. If people had not gathered around me, I would have recited it to you in the manner of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) recited Surah Al-Fath. Muawiyah bin Qurrah says that if I too did not fear people gathering, I would have demonstrated before you the style narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal, showing how the Prophet (ﷺ) recited.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، وَبَهْزٌ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِقَتْلِ الْكِلَابِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " مَا لَكُمْ وَلِلْكِلَابِ "، ثُمَّ رَخَّصَ فِي كَلْبِ الصَّيْدِ، وَالْغَنَمِ، وَقَالَ فِي الْإِنَاءِ: " إِذَا وَلَغَ فِيهِ الْكَلْبُ اغْسِلُوهُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ، وَعَفِّرُوهُ فِي الثَّامِنَةِ بِالتُّرَابِ " (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) initially ordered the killing of dogs, but later said that there is no longer a need for this, and permitted keeping dogs for hunting and for guarding herds of goats. And he said that when a dog puts its mouth in a vessel, wash it seven times and scrub it with earth the eighth time.

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ أَبُو دَاوُدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: " دُلِّيَ جِرَابٌ مِنْ شَحْمٍ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ، فَنَزَوْتُ وَأَخَذْتُهُ، فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ مِنْهُ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that on the occasion of Khaybar, I found a leather container in which there was fat. I picked it up and placed it under my arm. Suddenly, I noticed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was looking at me and smiling. At this, I felt ashamed.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ اتَّخَذَ كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ صَيْدٍ، أَوْ كَلْبِ غَنَمٍ، أَوْ كَلْبِ زَرْعٍ، فَإِنَّهُ يُنْتَقَصُ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ " (٢)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever keeps a dog that is not for the protection of crops, hunting, or livestock, his reward will decrease by one qirat every day.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَشْعَثُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ،، ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا يَبُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي مُسْتَحَمِّهِ، ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ فِيهِ، فَإِنَّ عَامَّةَ الْوَسْوَاسِ مِنْهُ ". (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade urinating in the bathhouse because it generally leads to the affliction of whisperings (waswasah).

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، فَخَذَفَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَهُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، أَنَّ قَرِيبًا لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، خَذَفَ، فَنَهَاهُ (٢)،

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ، لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا، فَاقْتُلُوا الْأَسْوَدَ الْبَهِيمَ،، ، وَأَيُّمَا قَوْمٍ اتَّخَذُوا كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ صَيْدٍ، أَوْ زَرْعٍ، أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ، نَقَصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ (١) ، كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ "، وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " صَلُّوا فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ، وَلَا تُصَلُّوا فِي مَبَارِكِ الْإِبِلِ، فَإِنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ " (٢)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If dogs were not a community (ummah), I would have ordered their extermination. Therefore, kill every extremely black dog. Whoever keeps a dog that is not for the purpose of guarding crops, hunting, or herds, their reward is diminished by one qirat every day. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You may pray among flocks of sheep, but not among herds of camels, because their creation is from Satan. (There is devilishness in their nature.)

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْمَرْأَةُ، وَالْحِمَارُ، وَالْكَلْبُ " (٣)،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a woman, a dog, or a donkey passes in front of a person who is praying, then his prayer is broken.

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ صُهْبَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنَّهُ نَهَى عَنِ الْخَذْفِ، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّهُ لَا يُصَادُ بِهِ صَيْدٌ، وَلَا يُنْكَأُ بِهِ عَدُوٌّ، وَلَكِنَّهَا تَفْقَأُ الْعَيْنَ، وَتَكْسِرُ السِّنَّ "، وَقَالَ يَزِيدُ مَرَّةً: " لَا يُصَادُ بِهَا صَيْدٌ، وَلَا يُنْكَأُ بِهَا عَدُوٌّ " (٤)، ،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade striking with pebbles and said that with it neither the enemy can be subdued nor any game can be caught; rather, it can break a tooth and put out an eye.

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، وَكَهْمَسٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ، عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ، عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ، لِمَنْ شَاءَ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There is prayer between every two calls to prayer; whoever wishes may offer it." (He said this twice.)

حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ، فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، فَإِنْ انْتَظَرَ حَتَّى يُفْرَغَ مِنْهَا، فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ " (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever accompanies a funeral and offers the funeral prayer will receive the reward of one qirat, and whoever waits until the burial is completed will receive the reward of two qirats.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَنْ اتَّخَذَ كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ صَيْدٍ، وَلَا زَرْعٍ، وَلَا غَنَمٍ، فَإِنَّهُ يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أَجْرِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ " (١)،

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever keeps a dog that is not for the protection of fields, hunting, or livestock, their reward will decrease by one qirat every day.

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ أَبُو زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ، حَدَّثَنِي فُضَيْلُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ الرَّقَاشِيُّ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، وَقَدْ غَزَا مَعَ عُمَرَ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيَّ، مَا حُرِّمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الشَّرَابِ؟ قَالَ: الْخَمْرَةُ، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا أُخْبِرُكَ إِلَّا مَا سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَوْ رَسُولَ اللهِ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: إِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ بَدَأَ بِالرِّسَالَةِ، أَوْ يَكُونَ بَدَأَ بِالِاسْمِ، فَقُلْتُ: شَرْعِي، إِنِّي (٢) اكْتَفَيْتُ، فَقَالَ: " نَهَى عَنِ الْحَنْتَمِ، وَهُوَ الْجَرُّ، وَنَهَى عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ، وَهُوَ الْقَرْعُ، وَنَهَى عَنِ الْمُزَفَّتِ، وَهُوَ مَا لُطِّخَ، ، بِالْقَارِ مِنْ زِقٍّ، أَوْ غَيْرِهِ، وَنَهَى عَنِ النَّقِيرِ "، قَالَ: " فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُ ذَاكَ اشْتَرَيْتُ أَفِيقَةً فَهِيَ هُوَ ذَا مُعَلَّقَةٌ يُنْبَذُ فِيهَا " (١)،

Fudail bin Zaid Raqashi says that once we were sitting with Abdullah bin Mughaffal when the topic of alcohol came up, and Abdullah said that alcohol is forbidden. I asked, "Is it declared forbidden in the Book of Allah?" He replied, "What do you mean? Do you want me to tell you what I heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding this?" I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbidding the use of pumpkin, hantam, and muzaffat (for making nabidh). I asked the meaning of hantam, and he said, "Every green and white jug." I asked the meaning of muzaffat, and he said, "A vessel made of pitch, etc." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the use of naqir. When I heard this hadith, I bought a vessel made of tanned leather—look, it is hanging there; nabidh is made in it.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ أَبِي رَائِطَةَ الْحَذَّاءُ التَّمِيمِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، أَوْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اللهَ اللهَ فِي أَصْحَابِي، (٢) لَا تَتَّخِذُوهُمْ غَرَضًا بَعْدِي، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّهُمْ فَبِحُبِّي أَحَبَّهُمْ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَهُمْ، فَبِبُغْضِي أَبْغَضَهُمْ، وَمَنْ آذَاهُمْ فَقَدْ آذَانِي، وَمَنْ آذَانِي فَقَدْ آذَى اللهَ وَمَنْ آذَى اللهَ، فَيُوشِكُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Ibn Mughaffal that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Fear Allah regarding my companions, do not make them a target of criticism after me. Whoever loves them, loves them because of my love, and whoever hates them, hates them because of his hatred for me. Whoever hurts them, hurts me, and whoever hurts me, hurts Allah. Allah will soon seize him.
