Hadith of Urwah ibn Abi al-Ja'd al-Bariqi from the Prophet (peace be upon him)

حَدِيثُ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ الْبَارِقِيِّ (١) ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ١٩٣٥٤ - حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ الْبَارِقِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " الْخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ بِنَوَاصِيهَا الْخَيْرُ، وَ (٢) الْأَجْرُ، وَالْمَغْنَمُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ " (٣)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Goodness, blessing, reward, and spoils of war have been tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection."

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْبَارِقِيُّ شَبِيبٌ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُرْوَةَ الْبَارِقِيَّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " الْخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ فِي نَوَاصِيهَا الْخَيْرُ " وَرَأَيْتُ فِي دَارِهِ سَبْعِينَ فَرَسًا (١)،

It is narrated from Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Goodness, blessing, reward, and spoils of war have been tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Judgment." And I have seen seventy horses in the house of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ).

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ شَبِيبٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ الْحَيَّ يُخْبِرُونَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ الْبَارِقِيِّ، " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ مَعَهُ بِدِينَارٍ يَشْتَرِي لَهُ أُضْحِيَّةً "، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: أَوْ شَاةً، فَاشْتَرَى لَهُ اثْنَتَيْنِ، فَبَاعَ وَاحِدَةً بِدِينَارٍ، وَأَتَاهُ بِالْأُخْرَى، " فَدَعَا لَهُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ فِي بَيْعِهِ " فَكَانَ لَوْ اشْتَرَى التُّرَابَ لَرَبِحَ فِيهِ، (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) gave him a dinar and sent him to buy a sacrificial animal. He bought two animals for one dinar, then sold one of the animals for one dinar, and brought back both the dinar and one animal. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for blessing in his trade, and after that, even if he bought dust, he would profit from it. Hadith number (19569) is also narrated through this second chain. حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، وحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ كُلُّهُمْ قَالَ: ابْنُ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ (١)، ،

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Zakariya, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Urwah ibn Abi al-Ja'd. And Abu Kamil narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Zayd, from al-Zubayr, from Abu Labid, from 'Urwah ibn Abi al-Ja'd. And Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Urwah ibn Abi al-Ja'd. All of them said: Ibn Abi al-Ja'd.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْخِرِّيتِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ الْبَارِقِيِّ قَالَ: عَرَضَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ، جَلَبٌ، فَأَعْطَانِي دِينَارًا وَقَالَ: " أَيْ عُرْوَةُ، ائْتِ الْجَلَبَ، فَاشْتَرِ لَنَا (١) شَاةً "، فَأَتَيْتُ الْجَلَبَ، فَسَاوَمْتُ صَاحِبَهُ، فَاشْتَرَيْتُ مِنْهُ شَاتَيْنِ بِدِينَارٍ، فَجِئْتُ أَسُوقُهُمَا، أَوْ قَالَ: أَقُودُهُمَا، فَلَقِيَنِي رَجُلٌ، فَسَاوَمَنِي، فَأَبِيعُهُ (٢) شَاةً بِدِينَارٍ، فَجِئْتُ بِالدِّينَارِ، وَجِئْتُهُ (٣) بِالشَّاةِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا دِينَارُكُمْ، وَهَذِهِ شَاتُكُمْ. قَالَ: " وَصَنَعْتَ كَيْفَ؟ " قَالَ: فَحَدَّثْتُهُ الْحَدِيثَ، فَقَالَ: " اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُ فِي صَفْقَةِ يَمِينِهِ " فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَقِفُ بِكُنَاسَةِ الْكُوفَةِ، فَأَرْبَحُ أَرْبَعِينَ أَلْفًا قَبْلَ أَنْ أَصِلَ إِلَى أَهْلِي، وَكَانَ يَشْتَرِي الْجَوَارِيَ وَيَبِيعُ، (٤)، ، •

It is narrated from Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) came to know about the arrival of some goats. He gave me a dinar and sent me to buy a goat. I went there and bargained with the owner of the goats and bought two goats for one dinar. I started driving them back. On the way, I met a man who bargained with me, and I sold him one goat for one dinar. Then, taking the dinar and one goat, I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Here is your dinar and here is your goat." The Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "How did this happen?" I narrated the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah, bless him in the dealings of his right hand." After that, a time came upon me when I stood at the garbage heap of Kufa and earned a profit of forty thousand before reaching home. It should be noted that Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to trade in slave girls. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ، (١) حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْخِرِّيتِ، عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ وَهُوَ لُمَازَةُ بْنُ زَبَّارٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ الْبَارِقِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ (٢)،

Abdullah said: Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Zayd narrated to us, al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirit narrated to us, from Abu Labid—and he is Lumazah ibn Zabbar—from 'Urwah ibn Abi al-Ja'd al-Bariqi, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the like of it.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْعَيْزَارَ بْنَ حُرَيْثٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الْجَعْدِ الْأَزْدِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " الْخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ فِي نَوَاصِيهَا الْخَيْرُ " (٣)،

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْخِرِّيتِ، عَنْ، أَبِي لَبِيدٍ قَالَ: كَانَ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ الْبَارِقِيُّ نَازِلًا بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِنَا، فَحَدَّثَ عَنْهُ، أَبُو لَبِيدٍ لُمَازَةُ بْنُ زَبَّارٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ قَالَ: عَرَضَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَلَبٌ، فَأَعْطَانِي دِينَارًا، فَقَالَ: " أَيْ عُرْوَةُ ائْتِ الْجَلَبَ " فَاشْتَرِ لَنَا شَاةً، قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُ الْجَلَبَ، فَسَاوَمْتُ صَاحِبَهُ، فَاشْتَرَيْتُ مِنْهُ شَاتَيْنِ بِدِينَارٍ، فَجِئْتُ أَسُوقُهُمَا، أَوْ قَالَ: أَقُودُهُمَا، فَلَقِيَنِي رَجُلٌ، فَسَاوَمَنِي فَأَبِيعُهُ شَاةً بِدِينَارٍ، فَجِئْتُ بِالدِّينَارِ وَجِئْتُ بِالشَّاةِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا دِينَارُكُمْ، وَهَذِهِ شَاتُكُمْ، قَالَ: " وَصَنَعْتَ كَيْفَ؟ " فَحَدَّثْتُهُ الْحَدِيثَ، فَقَالَ: " اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُ فِي صَفْقِ (١) يَمِينِهِ " فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَقِفُ بِكُنَاسَةِ الْكُوفَةِ فَأَرْبَحُ أَرْبَعِينَ أَلْفًا قَبْلَ أَنْ أَصِلَ إِلَى أَهْلِي وَكَانَ يَشْتَرِي الْجَوَارِيَ وَيَبِيعُ (٢)،

It is narrated from Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) learned that some goats had arrived. He gave me a dinar and sent me to buy a goat. I went there, bargained with the owner of the goats, and bought two goats for one dinar. I drove them along, and on the way, I met a man who bargained with me. I sold him one goat for one dinar. Then, taking the dinar and one goat, I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Here is your dinar and here is your goat." The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) asked, "How did this happen?" I told him the whole story. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "O Allah, bless him in the dealings of his right hand." After that, there came a time when I stood at the garbage dump of Kufa and, before reaching home, earned a profit of forty thousand. It should be noted that Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to trade in slave girls.
