Chapter 1

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband Abu Amr bin Hafs bin Mughirah one day sent me a message of divorce and along with it sent five saa’ of barley. I said: I have nothing else to spend except this, and can I spend my waiting period (‘iddah) in your house? He said: No. Hearing this, I gathered my clothes and then presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: “How many divorces did he give you?” I replied: Three divorces. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “He has spoken the truth, you will not receive any maintenance, and you should spend your ‘iddah in the house of your paternal cousin Ibn Umm Maktum, because his eyesight is very weak. You may even remove your headscarf in front of him. When your ‘iddah is over, inform me.” After the ‘iddah, several people sent me proposals of marriage, among whom were Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Jahm (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Muawiyah is poor and has no wealth, while Abu Jahm beats women (he is harsh in nature). However, you should marry Usamah bin Zaid.”

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (ﷺ) came out and led the Zuhr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) completed his prayer, he said, "Remain seated!" (He, peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit. The people were surprised, so he said: "O people! Remain seated in your place of prayer! I have not gathered you to encourage you towards something or to warn you from Allah. I have only gathered you because Tamim Dari came to me, pledged allegiance to Islam, and became Muslim, and he told me something: He and his paternal cousins boarded a sea vessel, and suddenly a storm arose in the sea. They reached an unknown island in the sea until the sun set. Then they entered the island in small boats, and there they met an animal covered with thick and dense hair. They could not tell whether it was male or female. They greeted it with salam, and it replied. They asked, 'Who are you?' It said, 'O people! Go to that man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know about you.' We asked it, 'Who are you?' It replied, 'I am Jassasah.' So they went on until they entered the monastery, where there was a man bound with great severity. He asked, 'Who are you?' They said, 'We are people from Arabia.' He asked, 'What has become of the people of Arabia? Has their Prophet appeared?' They said, 'Yes!' He asked, 'What did the people of Arabia do?' They replied, 'They did well, believed in him, and affirmed him.' He said, 'They did well.' Then he asked, 'What has become of the people of Persia? Have they prevailed over them?' They said, 'They have not yet prevailed over the people of Persia.' He said, 'Know that soon they will prevail over them.' He said, 'Tell me about the spring of Zughar.' We said, 'It has abundant water, and the people there farm with its water.' Then he said, 'What has become of the date palms of Baisan? Have they started bearing fruit?' They said, 'Its early part has started to bear fruit.' At this, he jumped so much that we thought he would attack us. We asked him, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the Messiah (Dajjal). Soon I will be permitted to come out. When I come out, I will travel the earth and descend upon every town in forty nights, except for Makkah and Taybah, for entering them has been made forbidden for me.'" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Muslims! Rejoice, for Taybah is this Madinah. Dajjal will not be able to enter it."

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband Abu Amr bin Hafs bin Mughirah sent me a message of divorce one day, and along with it, he sent five qafiz of barley and five qafiz of dates. Other than this, he did not provide any residence or maintenance. I presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "He has spoken the truth; you will not receive any maintenance, and you should spend your waiting period (‘iddah) in the house of your paternal cousin Ibn Umm Maktum." It should be noted that her husband had given her an irrevocable divorce (talaq bain).

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband Abu Amr bin Hafs bin Mughirah one day sent me a message of divorce and along with it sent five saa’ of barley. I said: I have nothing else for my expenses except this, and can I spend my ‘iddah in your house? He said: No. Hearing this, I gathered my clothes and then presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: “How many divorces did he give you?” I replied: Three divorces. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “He has spoken the truth, you will not receive any maintenance and you should spend your ‘iddah in the house of your paternal cousin Ibn Umm Maktum, because his eyesight is very weak, you may even remove your headscarf in front of him. When your ‘iddah is over, inform me.” After the ‘iddah, several people sent me proposals of marriage, among them were Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Jahm (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Muawiyah is poor and has no wealth, while Abu Jahm beats women (he is harsh in nature), but you should marry Usamah bin Zaid.”

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband Abu Amr bin Hafs bin Mughirah sent me a message of divorce one day, at that time he had gone to Yemen with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He also told Harith bin Hisham and Ayyash bin Abi Rabi’ah to provide me with maintenance, but they said, "By Allah! You will not receive maintenance until you are pregnant." She went to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "They have spoken the truth, you will not receive any maintenance, and you should spend your waiting period (‘iddah) in the house of your paternal cousin Ibn Umm Maktum, because his eyesight has become very weak, you may even remove your headscarf in front of him. When your ‘iddah is over, inform me." After the ‘iddah, the Prophet (ﷺ) married her to Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him). Once Marwan sent Qabisah bin Dhu’ayb to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask about this hadith, so she narrated the same hadith. Marwan said, "We have only heard this hadith from a woman; we will act upon what we have seen people practicing." When Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) learned of this, she said: "The Qur’an will decide between me and you. Allah Almighty says: «لا تُخْرِجُوهُنَّ مِنْ بُيُوتِهِنَّ وَلا يَخْرُجْنَ إِلا أَنْ يَأْتِينَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ حَتَّى بَلَغَ لا تَدْرِي لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أَمْرًا » 'Do not expel them from their houses, nor should they leave, unless they commit a clear act of indecency.' Perhaps after this Allah will bring about a new situation." She said: "This command is regarding the one to whom return (reconciliation) is possible. Tell me, after three divorces, what new situation can arise?"

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband gave me three divorces, so the Prophet (ﷺ) did not prescribe residence or maintenance for me. But Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we cannot abandon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) merely on the statement of one woman; it is possible that the woman may have forgotten. And Imam Shabi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) also told me that the Prophet (ﷺ) had ordered her to spend her waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum.

Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the maternal aunt of Bint Saeed Zaid and was married to Abdullah bin Amr bin Uthman, narrated that her husband gave her three divorces. Her niece’s maternal aunt, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), sent a messenger to call her there. At that time, the governor of Madinah Munawwarah was Marwan bin Hakam. Qabeesah says that Marwan sent me to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask why she forced a woman to leave her house before her waiting period (iddah) was completed. She replied, “Because the Prophet (ﷺ) gave me the same command.” Then she narrated that hadith to me, and then said, “I also make ijtihad (independent reasoning) from the Holy Qur’an as my evidence. Allah Almighty says in His Book: « إِذَا طَلَّقْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّ لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ وَأَحْصُوا الْعِدَّةَ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ لا تُخْرِجُوهُنَّ مِنْ بُيُوتِهِنَّ وَلا يَخْرُجْنَ إِلا أَنْ يَأْتِينَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ إِلَى لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أَمْرًا » ‘If you divorce your wives, then divorce them at the commencement of their waiting period (tuhr), and count the days of the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. Do not expel them from their houses, nor should they leave, unless they commit a clear act of indecency.’ Perhaps after this Allah will bring about a new matter. In the third stage, He said: « فَإِذَا بَلَغْنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ الثَّالِثَةَ فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ فَارِقُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ » ‘When they have completed their waiting period, then either retain them in a fair manner or release them in a fair manner.’ By Allah, after this third stage, Allah has not mentioned keeping the woman back. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) gave me the same command.” The narrator says, “I went to Marwan and told him the whole matter. He said, ‘This is just the statement of a woman, this is just the statement of a woman,’ and then he ordered her niece to be sent back to her house, so she was sent back until her waiting period was over.”

It is narrated from Imam ‘Amir Sha‘bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that once I visited Madinah Munawwarah and went to the house of Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her). She narrated this hadith to me: During the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), her husband divorced her, and during that period, the Prophet (ﷺ) sent him away with a detachment. Her husband's brother said to her, "You should leave this house." I asked him, "Will I receive maintenance and accommodation until my waiting period (‘iddah) is over?" He replied, "No." So I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "So-and-so has divorced me, and his brother is turning me out of the house and is not giving me maintenance or accommodation." The Prophet (ﷺ) sent for him and asked, "What dispute do you have with the daughter of Al-Qais?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah! My brother has given her three divorces at once." Upon this, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O daughter of Al-Qais! Listen, maintenance and accommodation are due from the husband to the wife whom he can still take back, but when there is no possibility of taking her back, then the woman is not entitled to maintenance and accommodation. Therefore, move from this house to the house of such-and-such woman." Then he said, "People gather at her house and talk, so go to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is blind and will not be able to see you. And do not arrange your next marriage yourself; rather, I will arrange your marriage myself." Meanwhile, a man from the Quraysh sent me a proposal. I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) to consult him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Will you not marry the one who is more beloved to me than him?" I said, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah! Marry me to whomever you wish." So the Prophet (ﷺ) married me to Usamah bin Zaid.

Imam Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when I was about to leave, she said to me, “Sit down, I will narrate to you a hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).” Once, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out and led the people in the Zuhr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) completed his prayer, he said: “Remain seated.” He (peace be upon him) ascended the pulpit. The people were surprised, so he said: “O people! Remain in your places of prayer. I have not gathered you to encourage you towards something or to frighten you from Allah. I have only gathered you because Tamim Dari came to me, pledged allegiance to Islam, and became Muslim. He told me something which, out of happiness and coolness to my eyes, prevented me from taking my midday nap. Therefore, I wanted to spread the happiness of your Prophet to you. He informed me that he, along with his paternal cousins, boarded a sea vessel. Suddenly, a storm arose in the sea, and they reached an unknown island in the sea until the sun set. They entered the island in small boats and there they encountered an animal covered with thick and dense hair. They could not discern whether it was male or female. They greeted it with salam, and it replied. They asked, ‘Who are you?’ It said, ‘O people! Go to that man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know about you.’ We asked it, ‘Who are you?’ It replied, ‘I am Jassasah.’ So they went until they entered the monastery. There was a man there, bound with great severity. He was extremely sad and complained a lot. They greeted him with salam, and he replied and asked, ‘Who are you?’ They said, ‘We are people from Arabia.’ He asked, ‘What has happened to the people of Arabia? Has their Prophet appeared?’ They said, ‘Yes!’ He asked, ‘What did the people of Arabia do?’ They replied, ‘They did well, they believed in him and affirmed him.’ He said, ‘They did well. They were his enemies, but Allah made them prevail over him.’ He asked, ‘Is there now one God, one religion, and one word among the Arabs?’ They said, ‘Yes!’ He asked, ‘What has become of the spring of Zughar?’ They said, ‘It is fine; people drink its water themselves and irrigate their fields with it.’ He asked, ‘What has become of the orchard between Amman and Baisan?’ They said, ‘It is fine and bears fruit every year.’ He asked, ‘What has become of the Lake of Tiberias?’ They said, ‘It is full.’ At this, he became restless and swore three times, saying, ‘If I am released from this place, I will not leave any part of Allah’s earth without trampling it under my feet, except for Taybah, for I will have no power over it.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘At this point, my happiness increased (he said this three times). Madinah is Taybah, and Allah has made it forbidden for Dajjal to enter my sanctuary.’ Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) swore an oath, saying: ‘By Him besides whom there is no deity, there is no narrow or wide valley or mountain of Madinah except that there is an angel with a drawn sword appointed over it until the Day of Resurrection. Dajjal does not have the power to enter this city.’ Amir says: Then I met Muharrir bin Abi Hurairah (may Allah have mercy on him) and narrated to him this hadith of Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her), so he said: ‘I bear witness that my father narrated this hadith to me exactly as Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated it to you, except that my father told me that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “It is towards the east.”’ Then I met Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) and mentioned to him this hadith of Fatimah. He said: ‘I bear witness that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated this hadith to me exactly as Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated it to you, except that she said that both sanctuaries, i.e., Makkah and Madinah, will be forbidden to Dajjal.’

It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (ﷺ) came out and led the Zuhr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) completed his prayer, he sat on the pulpit. The people were surprised, so he said: "O people! Remain in your places of prayer. I have not gathered you to encourage you towards something or to frighten you from Allah. I have only gathered you because Tamim Dari came to me, pledged allegiance to Islam, and became Muslim. He told me something: that he boarded a sea ship with his cousins, and suddenly a storm arose in the sea. They reached an unknown island in the sea until the sun set. Then they entered the island in small boats. There they met an animal covered with thick and dense hair. They could not understand whether it was a man or a woman. They greeted it, and it replied. They asked, 'Who are you?' It said: 'O people! Go to that man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know about you.' We asked it, 'Who are you?' It said, 'I am Jassasah.' So they went until they entered the monastery. There was a man there who was bound with great severity. He asked, 'Who are you?' They said, 'We are people from Arabia.' He asked, 'What has happened to the people of Arabia? Has their Prophet appeared?' They said, 'Yes!' He asked, 'Then what did the people of Arabia do?' They replied, 'They did well, they believed in him and affirmed him.' He said, 'They did well.' Then he asked, 'What has happened to the people of Persia? Have they overcome them?' They said, 'They have not yet overcome the people of Persia.' He said, 'Remember! Soon they will overcome them.' He said, 'Tell me about the spring of Zughar.' We said, 'It has abundant water, and the people there cultivate crops with its water.' Then he said, 'What has happened to the date palms of Baisan? Have they started bearing fruit?' They said, 'Its early part has started to bear fruit.' At this, he jumped so much that we thought he would attack us. We asked him, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the Messiah (Dajjal). Soon I will be given permission to come out. When I come out, I will travel the earth and will descend upon every town in forty nights, except for Makkah and Taybah, for entering them has been made forbidden for me.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O Muslims! Rejoice, for Taybah is this Madinah. Dajjal will not be able to enter it.'"
