It is narrated from Fatimah bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that my husband Abu Amr bin Hafs bin Mughirah one day sent me a message of divorce and sent five saa’ of barley with his agent. I said, “I have nothing to spend and can I spend my ‘iddah in your house?” He said, “No.” Hearing this, I gathered my clothes and then presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked, “How many divorces did he give you?” I replied, “Three divorces.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He has spoken the truth, you will not receive any maintenance and you should spend your ‘iddah in the house of your paternal cousin Ibn Umm Maktum, because his eyesight is very weak. You may even remove your headscarf in front of him. When your ‘iddah is over, inform me.” After the ‘iddah, several people sent me proposals of marriage, among whom were Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Jahm (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Muawiyah is poor and has no wealth, while Abu Jahm beats women (he is harsh in nature). However, you should marry Usamah bin Zaid.” So she did as he said.
