Hadith of Umaymah bint Ruqayqah (may Allah be pleased with her)

حَدِيثُ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ (١)، ٢٧٠٠٦ - حَدَّثَنِيَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعَ ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتَ رُقَيْقَةَ، تَقُولُ: بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسْوَةٍ، فَلَقَّنَنَا (٢) : " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَقْتُنَّ (٣) ". قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا (٤) مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا. قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بَايِعْنَا. قَالَ: " إِنِّي (٥) لَا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ، قَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ " (٦)، ،

It is narrated from Umaymah bint Ruqaiqah that I, along with some Muslim women, presented myself before the Prophet (peace be upon him) to pledge allegiance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to do so according to our ability and strength. I said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves. O Messenger of Allah! Please accept our pledge. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "(Go, I have accepted the pledge of all of you.) I do not shake hands with women. My statement to a hundred women is the same as to one woman."

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ التَّيْمِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسْوَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ لِنُبَايِعَهُ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، جِئْنَا لِنُبَايِعَكَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا نُشْرِكَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا، وَلَا نَسْرِقَ، وَلَا نَزْنِيَ، وَلَا نَقْتُلَ، ، أَوْلَادَنَا، وَلَا نَأْتِيَ بِبُهْتَانٍ نَفْتَرِيهِ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَأَرْجُلِنَا، وَلَا نَعْصِيَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ. قَالَتْ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَقْتُنَّ (١) " قَالَتْ: قُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ (٢) أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا، بَايِعْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " اذْهَبْنَ، فَقَدْ بَايَعْتُكُنَّ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ، كَقَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ " قَالَتْ: " وَلَمْ يُصَافِحْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَّا امْرَأَةً " (٣)،

It is narrated from Umaymah bint Ruqaiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that I, along with some Muslim women, presented ourselves before the Prophet (ﷺ) to pledge allegiance (bay'ah). We all said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you to pledge allegiance on these conditions: that we will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill our children, will not fabricate any slander between our hands and feet, and will not disobey you in any good work. The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed us: and do so as much as you are able and to the best of your ability. I said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves. O Messenger of Allah! Accept our pledge. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "(Go, I have accepted the pledge from all of you) I do not shake hands with women; my word to a hundred women is the same as to one woman." Thus, the Prophet (ﷺ) did not shake hands with any of us women.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ، أَنَّها قَالَتْ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسْوَةٍ نُبَايِعُهُ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، نُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا نُشْرِكَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا، وَلَا نَسْرِقَ، وَلَا نَزْنِيَ، وَلَا نَأْتِيَ بِبُهْتَانٍ نَفْتَرِيهِ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَأَرْجُلِنَا، وَلَا نَعْصِيَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ، قَالَ: " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ، ، وَأَطَقْتُنَّ " (١) . قَالَتْ: فَقُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنَّا بِأَنْفُسِنَا، هَلُمَّ نُبَايِعُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنِّي لَا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ، كَقَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ " (٢)،

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ، قَالَتْ: أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فِي نِسَاءٍ نُبَايِعُهُ، فَأَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا مَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ: أَنْ لَا نُشْرِكَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا الْآيَةَ، قَالَ: " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَقْتُنَّ (٣) ". قُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا. قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَلَا تُصَافِحُنَا؟ قَالَ: " إِنِّي لَا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، كَقَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ " (٤)، ،

We all said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you to pledge allegiance on the conditions that are in the Qur’an. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prompted us: And according to your ability and strength, you will do so. I said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves. O Messenger of Allah! Please accept our pledge. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “(Go, I have accepted the pledge from all of you) I do not shake hands with women.” So my statement to women is the same as to one woman. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not shake hands with any of us women.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتَ رُقَيْقَةَ، تُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " لَسْتُ أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، كَقَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Ummaymah bint Ruqaiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I do not shake hands with women, so my statement to women is the same as it is to one woman."
