Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Umaymah bint Ruqaiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that I, along with some Muslim women, presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to pledge allegiance (bay’ah). We all said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you to pledge allegiance on the conditions that are in the Qur’an. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prompted us: And according to your ability and strength, you will do so. I said: Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves. O Messenger of Allah! Please accept our pledge. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “(Go, I have accepted the pledge from all of you) I do not shake hands with women.” So my statement to women is the same as to one woman. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not shake hands with any of us women.
