Chapter 1

It is narrated from Safiyyah that I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: "An army will surely set out with the intention of attacking this House (the Ka'bah). When they reach a place called Bayda, the middle part of their army will be swallowed by the earth, and neither the front nor the rear of the army will be saved, nor those in the middle." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what will happen to those people who were forced to join this army?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "No, they will be raised according to their intentions."

It is narrated from Safiyyah that once the Prophet (peace be upon him) was in a state of i'tikaf. I came to the Prophet's presence at night to meet him. After talking for a while, I stood up to leave, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) also got up to see me off. At that time, my residence was in the house of Usama bin Zaid. Meanwhile, two Ansari men passed by, and when they saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), they quickened their pace. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to them, "Wait, this is Safiyyah bint Huyayy." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, O Messenger of Allah (could we ever think anything bad about you?)" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Satan runs in the human being like blood, so I feared that he might put some evil thought into your hearts."

Sahira bint Jaifar says that once we performed Hajj, then we went to Madinah Munawwarah and there we also visited Safiyyah bint Huyayy. We found some women from Kufa sitting with her. These women said to Sahira, "If you wish, you can ask questions and we will listen, otherwise we will ask questions and you listen." We said, "You ask the questions." So they asked Safiyyah several questions, for example, regarding husband and wife, regarding the days of impurity, and then regarding the nabidh (fermented drink) made in a jug. Safiyyah said, "O people of Iraq, you ask a lot about the nabidh made in a jug (the Prophet, peace be upon him, has declared it haram). However, there is no harm for any of you to cook your dates, then strain and clean them, and put them in a waterskin, tie its mouth, and when it becomes good, drink it yourself and give it to your husband to drink as well."

It is narrated from Safiyyah that on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (ﷺ) took his noble wives along with him. While they were still on the way, a man dismounted and began to drive the mounts of the noble wives quickly. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Take these glass vessels (women) gently." During the journey, Safiyyah's camel became unruly. Her mount was the best and most beautiful among them. She began to weep. When the Prophet (ﷺ) found out, he came and began to wipe her tears with his blessed hand, but she wept even more. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept forbidding her, but when he saw that she was crying even more, the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade her sternly and ordered the people to camp, even though there was no intention to camp at that place. The people set up camp. Coincidentally, it was Safiyyah's turn that day. A tent was set up for the Prophet (ﷺ), and he went into his tent. Safiyyah says that she did not know how to approach the Prophet (ﷺ). She was afraid that the Prophet (ﷺ) might be displeased with her. So she went to Aisha and said, "You know that I cannot sell my turn with the Prophet (ﷺ) for anything, but today I give you my turn on the condition that you make the Prophet (ﷺ) pleased with me." Aisha agreed, took her scarf which she had dyed with saffron, sprinkled water on it so that its fragrance would spread, then put on new clothes and went towards the Prophet (ﷺ). When she reached near the Prophet's tent, she lifted a corner of the curtain. The Prophet (ﷺ) saw her and said, "Aisha! What is the matter? Today is not your turn." She replied, "This is the bounty of Allah, He gives it to whom He wills." The Prophet (ﷺ) spent that afternoon resting with his noble wife (Aisha). When it was time to depart, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to Zainab bint Jahsh, who had more space in her mount, "Take your sister Safiyyah with you on your camel." Zainab blurted out, "Shall I take your Jewish wife with me?" The Prophet (ﷺ) became displeased upon hearing this and stopped speaking to her until they reached Makkah Mukarramah, spent the days in Mina, and then returned to Madinah Munawwarah. The months of Muharram and Safar passed, but the Prophet (ﷺ) did not go to Zainab, not even on her turn, which made Zainab somewhat hopeless. When the month of Rabi' al-Awwal came, the Prophet (ﷺ) went to her. She thought, "This shadow must be of some man; the Prophet (ﷺ) is not coming to me, so who is this?" Meanwhile, the Prophet (ﷺ) entered the house. Seeing the Prophet (ﷺ), Zainab said, "O Messenger of Allah! Out of happiness, I do not know what to do at your arrival." She had a slave girl who used to prepare the tent for her. She said, "Such-and-such slave girl is now yours." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) walked to Zainab's bed, placed his hand on it, then secluded himself with her and became pleased with her.
