Chapter 1
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،
It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that we complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the intense heat at the time of the Zuhr prayer, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not remove this hardship (because the times of prayer are fixed by Allah).

Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the participants of the Battle of Badr, says that once I was waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) at night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) started the prayer and kept praying the whole night until the time of Fajr. Then he ended his prayer with salam. After that, Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you! Tonight you performed such a prayer that I have never seen you pray like this before." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Yes. This was a prayer of encouragement and warning. In this prayer, I asked my Lord for three things, out of which He granted me two and refused one. I requested my Lord not to destroy us as He destroyed the previous nations; He accepted this request of mine. Then I requested Him not to impose any external enemy upon us; He also accepted this. Then I requested my Lord not to divide us into different sects, but He did not accept this request of mine."

Haritha reports that we went to visit Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill, and he said: "If I had not heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying that none of you should wish for death, I would certainly have wished for it." Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the participants of the Battle of Badr, says: "Once, at night, I was waiting for the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) began to pray and continued praying all night until the time of Fajr. Then he ended his prayer with salam. After that, Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you, tonight you performed such a prayer that...' Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith."

Yaqoob narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Salih, Ibn Shihab said, Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal informed me, from Abdullah ibn Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, that Khabbab said: I observed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in a prayer which he prayed until it was with the dawn. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer with salam, Khabbab came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you have prayed... and he mentioned similar to the hadith of Shu'ayb.
Abu Ma'mar says that we asked Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite (Qur'an) in the Zuhr prayer. He replied, "Yes." We asked, "How did you know?" He said, "Because of the movement of his blessed beard."
It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we presented ourselves in the court of the Prophet (peace be upon him). At that time, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah, reclining on his cloak. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us and seek help for us." Upon hearing this, the face of the Prophet (peace be upon him) turned red and he said, "For the people before you, pits were dug as punishment for accepting the religion, and saws were placed on their heads and their heads were split open, but this did not turn them away from their religion. Similarly, iron combs were used to tear the flesh and nerves from behind their bones, but even this pain did not turn them away from their religion. And Allah will surely complete this religion, until a rider will travel from Sana'a to Hadramaut fearing none but Allah, or fearing the attack of a wolf on his sheep. But you people are hasty."
It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that we migrated with the Prophet (peace be upon him) solely for the pleasure of Allah, therefore our reward is with Allah. Now, some of us have passed away and did not partake of any of their reward. Among them was Mus'ab bin Umair, who was martyred at the Battle of Uhud, and we could not find anything to shroud him with except a single sheet. If we covered his head, his feet would remain uncovered, and if we covered his feet, his head would remain uncovered. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to cover his head and place a type of grass called 'izkhir' on his feet. And some of us are those whose fruits have ripened and they are gathering them.

Qais says that we went to visit Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was engaged in the construction of his garden. Seeing us, he said that a Muslim receives reward for everything except for what he plants in this soil. He had treated himself by cauterizing his stomach seven times and was saying that if the Prophet (ﷺ) had not forbidden us from praying for death, I would certainly have prayed for it.

Abu Muammar says that we asked Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), did the Prophet (peace be upon him) recite (Qur'an) in the Zuhr prayer? He said, yes. We asked, how did you know? He replied, because of the movement of the blessed beard of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

A man from Abdul Qais who was with the Khawarij and then separated from them says that the Khawarij entered a town, and from there, Abdullah bin Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) came out in fear, dragging his sheet. The Khawarij said to him, "Do not be afraid." He replied, "By Allah, you have frightened me." The Khawarij asked, "Are you Abdullah, the son of Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), the companion of the Prophet (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Yes." The Khawarij said, "Have you heard any hadith from your father regarding the Prophet (ﷺ) that you can narrate to us?" He replied, "Yes, I heard my father say regarding the Prophet (ﷺ) that the Prophet (ﷺ), mentioning the time of tribulations, said: 'In that time, the one who is sitting will be better than the one who is standing, and the one who is standing will be better than the one who is walking, and the one who is walking will be better than the one who is running. If you reach that time, then become the slain servant of Allah, not the killer servant of Allah.'" The Khawarij asked, "Did you really hear this from your father regarding the Prophet (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Yes." So they seized Abdullah, took him to the bank of the river, and martyred him there. His blood was flowing as if it were a sandal strap that had not been separated. Then they ripped open the belly of his slave woman (umm walad) and killed her child as well.

Narrated to us by Abu al-Nadr, narrated to us by Sulayman, from Humayd ibn Hilal, similarly, except that he said: "ma amdhaqarra," meaning it did not separate, and he said: "Do not be 'Abd Allah the killer," and likewise Bahz also said.

Haritha reports: I went to visit Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill. He had cauterized his body. When he saw me, he said: I do not think anyone has suffered as much pain as I have. During the blessed era of the Prophet (peace be upon him), I could not get even a single dirham, and now in one corner of my house, forty thousand dirhams are buried. If I had not heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say, "None of you should wish for death," I would certainly have wished for it.

It is narrated from Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) that I used to work with iron in Makkah Mukarramah and I was working for ‘As bin Wa’il. Once, some dirhams became due to me from him. I came to him to demand them, so he said, “I will not pay you until you deny Muhammad.” I said, “I will not deny Muhammad, not even if you die and are brought back to life.” He said, “When I am brought back to life, I will have wealth and children (then I will pay your debt).” I mentioned this incident to the Prophet (ﷺ), so Allah revealed this verse: “Have you seen the one who disbelieves in Our verses and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children [in the Hereafter]?’”

Qais says: We went to visit Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was busy constructing his garden. Seeing us, he said, "A Muslim receives reward for everything except for what he plants in this soil." He had treated himself by cauterizing his stomach seven times and was saying, "If the Prophet (ﷺ) had not forbidden us from praying for death, I would surely have prayed for it, because my illness has become prolonged." And he said, "Our companions who have passed away, the world could not diminish their reward in the least, and as for us, whatever we received after them, we found no place for it except in the soil." It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we presented ourselves in the court of the Prophet (ﷺ) while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah, reclining on his cloak. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us and seek help for us." Upon hearing this, the face of the Prophet (ﷺ) turned red and he said, "For those before you, pits would be dug for them as a punishment for accepting the religion, and saws would be placed on their heads and their heads would be split, but this would not turn them away from their religion. Similarly, iron combs would be driven into the flesh and nerves behind their bones, but this pain would not turn them away from their religion. And Allah will surely complete this religion until a rider will travel between Sana'a and Hadramaut fearing none but Allah, or the attack of a wolf on his sheep. But you people are hasty."

Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us, Isma'il narrated to us, and he mentioned its meaning except that he said: "The world did not diminish them in anything, and iron combs were used on the flesh and nerves beneath his bone, yet nothing turned him away from his religion."

The daughter of Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with an army, and behind him, the Prophet (ﷺ) took such care of us that he would milk our goat. The Prophet (ﷺ) would milk the goat into a large bowl, and the bowl would become full to the brim. When Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) returned and milked it, he extracted the usual amount of milk. We said to him that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to milk it and the bowl would become full to the brim, but when you milked it, the milk decreased.

Haritha says that I went to visit Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness. He had cauterized his body. When he saw me, he said, "I do not think anyone has suffered as much pain as I have. During the blessed era of the Prophet (ﷺ), I could not get even a single dirham, and now, in one corner of my house, forty thousand dirhams are buried. If I had not heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say that none of you should wish for death, I would certainly have wished for it." Then a shroud was brought to him, and seeing it, he began to weep and said, "Even Hamza did not get this much of a shroud. There was a simple sheet, which if placed over his head, his feet would be uncovered, and if placed over his feet, his head would be uncovered. So his head was covered with it, and idhkhir grass was placed over his feet."

It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we presented ourselves in the court of the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting at that time in the shade of the Ka'bah, reclining on his cloak. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us and seek help for us." In the same way, iron combs were used to tear the flesh and muscles from behind their bones, but even this pain did not turn them away from their religion. It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting at the door of the Prophet (ﷺ) waiting for him to come out for the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet (ﷺ) came out and said, "Listen to me." The companions replied, "We are present." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Listen to me." The companions again replied as before. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Soon some rulers will come over you. Do not help them in their oppression, and whoever affirms their lies will never be able to come to me at the Pond of Kawthar."

It is narrated from Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that we migrated with the Prophet (peace be upon him) solely for the pleasure of Allah, therefore our reward is with Allah. Now, some of us have departed from this world and did not partake of any of their reward. And among us are some people whose fruits have ripened and they are gathering them.
