Chapter 1

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a very old man, walking with the support of a stick, came to the service of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! I have committed great deceptions and great sins. Can I be forgiven?" The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said, "All your deceptions and sins have been forgiven."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the court of the Messenger of Allah at ‘Ukaz and asked, “Who are the people following you in this matter of religion?” The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “The free and the slave.” At that time, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) were with the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). Then the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to me, “For now, go back until Allah grants His Messenger dominance.” So after some time, I came again and said, “May Allah sacrifice me for you! There are some things you know but I do not. Telling me will not harm you, but Allah will benefit me through it. Is there any particular time among the times that is more virtuous? Is there any time in which prayer should be avoided?” The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, “You have asked me a question that no one before you has asked. Allah, the Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven in the middle of the night and forgives all sins except for shirk and immorality. At that time, angels are present in the prayer, so keep praying until sunrise. When the sun rises, do not pray until it has risen high, because when it rises, it rises between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. However, when it has risen to the height of one or two spears, then you may pray, for this is the time when the angels are present in the prayer, until the shadow of the spear begins to appear, then stop praying, for at that time Hell is stoked. But when the shadow declines, you may pray, for in this prayer too the angels are present, until you have prayed the Asr prayer. After praying Asr, refrain from praying nawafil until sunset, for it sets between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it.”

It is narrated from Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) (before accepting Islam) and asked, "Who are the people following your religion?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "The free and the slave." By this, he meant Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). And Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) later says, "I have seen that time when I was a quarter of Islam."

Saleem bin Aamir says that once Ameer Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with an army towards the land of Rome. There was still some time left in the agreement between Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) and the Romans. Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that they would stop after reaching near them, and as soon as the term ended, they would start fighting them. But he saw that an old man riding on a mount was saying, "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar! Fulfill the promise, do not break the covenant. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) has said: If a person has an agreement with any nation, he should not untie or tie its knot before the term ends or before they break the covenant." When Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of this, he returned, and it was found out that the old man was Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Umamah says that I asked Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) to narrate to us a hadith from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) in which there is no addition, omission, or doubt. He replied: I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say: If a person has three children born to him in the state of Islam and they die before reaching the age of maturity, then Allah Almighty will admit that person into Paradise due to his compassion for those children. And whoever grows old in the way of Allah, that old age will be a source of light for him on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever shoots an arrow—whether it hits the target or misses—it is as if he has freed a slave. And whoever frees a Muslim slave, for every limb of that slave, it will be a means of freedom from Hell for him. And whoever spends two pairs (of something) in the way of Allah, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, so that he may enter Paradise through whichever gate he wishes.

Abu Taybah says that once Shurahbil bin Simt called Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O son of Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him)! Can you narrate to me any such hadith which you yourself heard from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), in which there is no addition, omission, or falsehood, and you are not narrating it from someone else who heard it from the Prophet (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Yes! I heard the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) say: Allah Almighty says: My love is assured for those who love each other for My sake; My love is assured for those who form rows for My sake; My love is assured for those who meet each other for My sake; My love is assured for those who spend on each other for My sake; and My love is assured for those who help each other for My sake."

Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say: Whoever throws an arrow—whether it hits the target or misses—it is as if he has freed a slave from among the descendants of Ismail. And whoever grows old in the path of Allah, that old age will be a source of light for him on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever frees a Muslim slave, for every limb of that slave, it will be a means of his freedom from Hell. And if a woman frees a Muslim slave-girl, for every limb of that slave-girl, it will be a ransom for her from the fire of Hell. And any Muslim man or woman whose three minor children die, they will become a shield for him from the fire of Hell. And whoever stands to perform ablution with the intention of prayer and thoroughly washes all the parts of ablution, he will be protected from every sin and slip, then when he stands for prayer, Allah will raise his rank by its blessing, and when he sits, he will sit free from sins. Shurahbil bin Simt said: O son of Abasah! Did you yourself hear this hadith from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ)? He replied: Yes! By Him besides whom there is no deity, if I had not heard this hadith from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) even up to seven times, I would not have cared if I did not narrate it to the people, but by Allah! I do not remember the number of times I have heard this hadith from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ).

And whoever grows old in the way of Allah, that old age will be a source of light for him on the Day of Judgment.

It is narrated from Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day horses were being presented before the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), and at that time Uyainah bin Hisn was also with the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "I know better horses than you." He replied, "I know men better than you." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "How is that?" He said, "The best men are those who carry swords on their shoulders, place spears on the necks of horses, and wear the cloaks of the people of Najd." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You are wrong; rather, the best people are the people of Yemen. Faith is Yemeni. This ruling applies up to Lakhm, Juzam, and Amilah. The people of Himyar who have passed are better than those who remain. Hadramaut is better than Banu Harith. One tribe can be better than another, and one tribe can be worse than another. By Allah! I do not care if both Hariths perish. Allah's curse is upon four types of kings: (1) the miserly, (2) the treacherous, (3) the ill-tempered, (4) the weak and feeble, and among them are also the ill-natured." Then he said, "My Lord commanded me twice to curse the Quraysh, so I cursed them. Then I was commanded twice to pray for mercy for them, so I prayed for them." And he said, "The tribe of 'Asiyyah has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger, except for Qais, Ja'dah, and 'Asiyyah." He also said, "Among the tribes of Aslam, Ghifar, Muzainah, and Juhainah, their common family tribes are Najran and Banu Taghlib, and in Paradise, the tribes with the greatest numbers will be Madhhij and Makool."
