Hadith of Safwan ibn Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ (١)، ٢٧٦٣٤ - حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: زَوَّجَنِي أَبِي فِي إِمَارَةِ عُثْمَانَ، فَدَعَا نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ صَفْوَانُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ وَهُوَ شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " انْهَسُوا اللَّحْمَ نَهْسًا فَإِنَّهُ أَهْنَأُ، وَأَمْرَأُ - أَوْ: أَشْهَى وَأَمْرَأُ - " قَالَ: سُفْيَانُ الشَّكُّ مِنِّي أَوْ مِنْهُ (٢)،

Abdullah bin Harith, may Allah have mercy on him, says that during the caliphate of Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, my father arranged my marriage and invited several companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to it. Among them was Safwan bin Umayyah, may Allah be pleased with him, who had become extremely old. When he came, he said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Tear the meat with your teeth and eat it, for it is more pleasant and easier to digest this way."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا التَّيْمِيُّ يَعْنِي سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ يَعْنِي النَّهْدِيَّ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَ: " الطَّاعُونُ، وَالْبَطْنُ، وَالْغَرَقُ، وَالنُّفَسَاءُ شَهَادَةٌ (٣) " قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ مِرَارًا وَقَدْ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّةً (٤)،

It is narrated (marfu'an) from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that dying from the plague, from a stomach illness, by drowning, or in the state of postnatal bleeding is also martyrdom.

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ، عَنْ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اسْتَعَارَ مِنْهُ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ أَدْرَاعًا،، ، فَقَالَ: أَغَصْبًا يَا مُحَمَّدُ؟ قَالَ: " بَلْ عَارِيَةٌ مَضْمُونَةٌ " قَالَ: فَضَاعَ بَعْضُهَا، فَعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُضَمِّنَهَا لَهُ، قَالَ: أَنَا الْيَوْمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ أَرْغَبُ (١)،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked him for some armors as a loan. (At that time, Safwan had not yet embraced Islam.) He asked, "O Muhammad! Are you taking them with the intention of seizing them by force?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "No, with the intention of borrowing, for which I am a guarantor." Coincidentally, some of those armors were lost. The Prophet (ﷺ) offered him compensation for them, but he said, "O Messenger of Allah! Today I feel a greater inclination towards Islam."

حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ (٢) أَنَّ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ خَلَفٍ، قِيلَ لَهُ: هَلَكَ مَنْ لَمْ يُهَاجِرْ؟ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: لَا أَصِلُ إِلَى أَهْلِي حَتَّى آتِيَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَرَكِبْتُ رَاحِلَتِي، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، زَعَمُوا أَنَّهُ هَلَكَ مَنْ لَمْ يُهَاجِرْ، قَالَ: " كَلَّا أَبَا وَهْبٍ، فَارْجِعْ إِلَى أَبَاطِحِ مَكَّةَ "، قَالَ: فَبَيْنَا أَنَا رَاقِدٌ، إِذْ (٣) جَاءَ السَّارِقُ، فَأَخَذَ ثَوْبِي مِنْ تَحْتِ رَأْسِي، فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ، فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ هَذَا سَرَقَ ثَوْبِي، " فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ يُقْطَعَ " فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَيْسَ هَذَا مَا أَرَدْتُ، هُوَ عَلَيْهِ صَدَقَةٌ، قَالَ: " هَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ؟ " (٤)،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that someone said to him that whoever does not migrate is ruined. Upon hearing this, I said that I will not go to my home until I meet the Prophet (ﷺ). So I mounted my ride and presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Some people are saying that whoever has not migrated is ruined? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O Abu Wahb! There is absolutely no such thing. You may return to the plain of Makkah." While I was sleeping in Masjid Nabawi, a thief came and took the cloth from under my head and left. I chased him, caught him, and presented him before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said that this person has stolen my cloth. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his hand to be cut off. I said: O Messenger of Allah! That was not my intention; this cloth is charity for him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Then why did you not give it in charity before bringing him to me?"

حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ مُبَارَكٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَ: " أَعْطَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ،، ، وَإِنَّهُ لَأَبْغَضُ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ فَمَا زَالَ (١) يُعْطِينِي حَتَّى صَارَ، وَإِنَّهُ لَأَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ " (٢)،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted me a share of the spoils of war on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn: Previously, I harbored the greatest enmity towards him, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) bestowed so much generosity and kindness upon me that he became dearer to me than all people.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ مُرَقَّعٍ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا، سَرَقَ بُرْدَهُ (٣) فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ " فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَدْ تَجَاوَزْتُ (٤) عَنْهُ قَالَ: " فَلَوْلَا كَانَ هَذَا (٥) قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ يَا أَبَا وَهْبٍ؟ " فَقَطَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (٦)،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a thief came and took a cloth from under my head and went away. I chased him, caught him, and presented him before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "This person has stolen my cloth." The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his hand to be cut off. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! (That was not my intention, this cloth is charity for him) I forgive him." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Why did you not forgive him before bringing him to me?" Then the Prophet (ﷺ) had his hand cut off.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ،، ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّهُ (١) لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَنْ هَاجَرَ، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: لَا أَدْخُلُ مَنْزِلِي حَتَّى آتِيَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَسْأَلَهُ، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ هَذَا سَرَقَ خَمِيصَةً لِي لِرَجُلٍ مَعَهُ، " فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ " فَقُلْتُ (٢) : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُهَا لَهُ، قَالَ: " فَهَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ؟ " قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ: لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَنْ هَاجَرَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا هِجْرَةَ بَعْدَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ وَلَكِنْ جِهَادٌ وَنِيَّةٌ، وَإِذَا اسْتُنْفِرْتُمْ فَانْفِرُوا " (٣)،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that someone said to him that whoever does not migrate will not enter Paradise. Upon hearing this, I said that I will not go to my home until I meet the Prophet (ﷺ). So I mounted my ride and presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Some people are saying that whoever has not migrated will not enter Paradise? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "After the conquest of Makkah, there is no command for migration, but jihad and intention remain. Therefore, when you are called to go out, then you should go out."

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِى سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ: قَالَ صَفْوَانُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا آخُذُ اللَّحْمَ عَنِ الْعَظْمِ بِيَدِي، فَقَالَ: " يَا صَفْوَانُ "، قُلْتُ: لَبَّيْكَ، قَالَ: " قَرِّبِ اللَّحْمَ مِنْ فِيكَ، فَإِنَّهُ أَهْنَأُ وَأَمْرَأُ " (٣)،

حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ يَعْنِى ابْنَ قَرْمٍ (٤) ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ ابْنِ أُخْتِ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ نَائِمًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَى خَمِيصَةٍ لِي، فَسُرِقَتْ فَأَخَذْنَا السَّارِقَ، فَرَفَعْنَاهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، " فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ " فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفِي خَمِيصَةٍ (٥) ثَمَنُ (٦) ثَلَاثِينَ دِرْهَمًا؟ أَنَا أَهَبُهَا لَهُ، أَوَ أَبِيعُهَا لَهُ، قَالَ: " فَهَلَّا كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ؟ " (٧)، ،

It is narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was sleeping in Masjid Nabawi when a thief came and took the cloth from under my head and went away. I chased him, caught him, and presented him before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "This person has stolen my cloth." The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered his hand to be cut off. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will his hand be cut off for a sheet worth thirty dirhams? I give it to him as a gift." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Why did you not give it in charity before bringing him to me?"
