From the hadith of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Zuhayr al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him)

وَمِنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ (١)، ٢٧٦٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، وَسُرَيْجٌ الْمَعْنَى، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعُ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَعْنِي الْجُمَحِيَّ، عَنْ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ، كِلَاهُمَا قَالَ: عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: بِالنَّبَاءَةِ أَوِ النَّبَاوَةِ - شَكَّ نَافِعُ بْنُ عُمَرَ - مِنَ الطَّائِفِ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تُوشِكُونَ أَنْ تَعْرِفُوا أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ " أَوْ قَالَ: " خِيَارُكُمْ مِنْ شِرَارِكُمْ " قَالَ: فَقَالَ: رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ (٢) : بِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: " بِالثَّنَاءِ السَّيِّئِ، وَالثَّنَاءِ الْحَسَنِ، وَأَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ " (٣)، ،

Abu Bakr bin Abi Zuhair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father that I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the time of Prophethood in Taif saying: "O people! Soon you will be able to distinguish between the people of Paradise and the people of Hell, or between the good and the bad." A man asked: O Messenger of Allah! How is that? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Through the good and bad praise of people, because you are Allah's witnesses over one another on the earth.
