Hadith of Ati ibn Dumrah al-Sa'di from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them)

حَدِيثُ عُتَيِّ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ السَّعْدِيِّ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، ٢١٢٣٣ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيِّ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا اعْتَزَى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَأَعَضَّهُ، وَلَمْ يُكَنِّهِ، فَنَظَرَ الْقَوْمُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ: إِنِّي قَدْ أَرَى الَّذِي فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ، إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ إِلَّا أَنْ أَقُولَ هَذَا، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَنَا: "إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ مَنْ يَعْتَزِي بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَأَعِضُّوهُ، وَلَا تَكْنُوا " (١)، ،

A man from the tribe of Ati bin Damrah Sa'di falsely attributed himself to someone else, so Abi (may Allah be pleased with him) shamed him by mentioning his father's private parts. People said to him, "You do not usually speak so openly?" He replied, "We have been commanded to do so, and the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us that if you hear a man attributing himself to the lineage of ignorance, then shame him by mentioning his father's private parts."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا (١) تَعَزَّى عِنْدَ أُبَيٍّ بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، افْتَخَرَ بِأَبِيهِ، فَأَعَضَّهُ بِأَبِيهِ، وَلَمْ يُكَنِّهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ: أَمَا إِنِّي قَدْ أَرَى الَّذِي فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنِّي لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ (٢) إِلَّا ذَلِكَ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: "مَنْ تَعَزَّى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَأَعِضُّوهُ، وَلَا تَكْنُوا " (٣)، ، •

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ (١) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، عَنْ أُبَيٍّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، مِثْلَهُ. (٢)،

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain. A man from Ati bin Damrah Sa'di attributed himself falsely to someone... Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith and said: He (the Prophet) said, "We have been commanded to do this, and the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us that if you hear a man attributing himself to the days of ignorance, then make him feel ashamed through his father's private parts." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا تَعَزَّى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: كُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ: "إِذَا الرَّجُلُ تَعَزَّى بِعَزَاءِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَأَعِضُّوهُ بِهَنِ أَبِيهِ، وَلَا تَكْنُوا " (٣)، •

Isma'il narrated to us, from Yunus, from al-Hasan, from 'Utayy, that a man expressed condolences in the manner of the Jahiliyyah, and he mentioned the hadith. Ubayy said: We used to be commanded, "If a man expresses condolences in the manner of the Jahiliyyah, then tell him to bite his father's private part and do not use euphemisms."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، قَالَ: قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: كُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ: "إِذَا اعْتَزَى رَجُلٌ " فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ (٤)، ، •

Abdullah narrated to us, Ubaydullah ibn Umar ibn Maysarah narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray’ narrated to us, Yunus narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from ‘Utayy, who said: Ubayy said: We used to be commanded, "when a man claims lineage," and he mentioned something similar.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، (١) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى أَبُو مُوسَى الْعَنَزِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا خَارِجَةُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، عَنْ أُبَيٍّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: "لِلْوُضُوءِ شَيْطَانٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ: الْوَلَهَانُ، فَاتَّقُوهُ " أَوْ قَالَ: "فَاحْذَرُوهُ " (٢)، ، •

It is narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: There is also a devil for ablution who is called "Walahaan"; beware of him.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ أَبُو يَحْيَى الْبَزَّازُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حُذَيْفَةَ مُوسَى بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِنَّ مَطْعَمَ ابْنِ آدَمَ جُعِلَ مَثَلًا لِلدُّنْيَا، وَإِنْ قَزَّحَهُ، وَمَلَّحَهُ فَانْظُرُوا إِلَى مَا يَصِيرُ " (١)، ، •

It is narrated from Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: The food of the son of Adam has been made an example of the world; no matter how many salts and spices you add to it, see what its end will be?

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عُتَيٍّ، قَالَ:، ، رَأَيْتُ شَيْخًا بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَتَكَلَّمُ، فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ، فَقَالُوا: هَذَا أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ، فَقَالَ: "إِنَّ آدَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ لَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ: أَيْ بَنِيَّ إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَذَهَبُوا يَطْلُبُونَ لَهُ، فَاسْتَقْبَلَتْهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَمَعَهُمْ أَكْفَانُهُ وَحَنُوطُهُ، وَمَعَهُمُ الْفُؤُوسُ وَالْمَسَاحِي وَالْمَكَاتِلُ، فَقَالُوا لَهُمْ: يَا بَنِي آدَمَ، مَا تُرِيدُونَ وَمَا تَطْلُبُونَ، أَوْ مَا تُرِيدُونَ وَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ؟، قَالُوا: أَبُونَا مَرِيضٌ فَاشْتَهَى مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ، قَالُوا لَهُمْ: ارْجِعُوا فَقَدْ قُضِيَ قَضَاءُ أَبِيكُمْ. فَجَاءُوا، فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُمْ حَوَّاءُ عَرَفَتْهُمْ، فَلَاذَتْ بِآدَمَ، فَقَالَ: إِلَيْكِ عَنِّي فَإِنِّي إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُ مِنْ قِبَلِكِ، خَلِّي بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَلَائِكَةِ رَبِّي تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى. فَقَبَضُوهُ، وَغَسَّلُوهُ وَكَفَّنُوهُ وَحَنَّطُوهُ، وَحَفَرُوا لَهُ وَأَلْحَدُوا لَهُ، وَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ دَخَلُوا قَبْرَهُ فَوَضَعُوهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَوَضَعُوا عَلَيْهِ اللَّبِنَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا مِنَ الْقَبْرِ، ثُمَّ حَثَوْا عَلَيْهِ التُّرَابَ، (١) ثُمَّ قَالُوا: يَا بَنِي آدَمَ هَذِهِ سُنَّتُكُمْ " (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

‘Ati says that I saw an elder speaking in Madinah Munawwarah, so I asked people about him (who is he?). People told me that he is Ubayy bin Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that when the time of Adam’s (peace be upon him) departure from this world drew near, he said to his sons, “Children! My heart desires to eat the fruit of Paradise.” So his sons set out in search of the fruit of Paradise. They saw angels coming towards them, who had with them a shroud and embalming materials, and in their hands were axes, shovels, and spades. The angels asked them, “O children of Adam, where are you intending to go and what are you searching for?” They replied, “Our father is ill and his heart desires to eat the fruit of Paradise.” The angels said to them, “Go back, for your father’s final time has come near.” When the angels reached Adam (peace be upon him), Hawwa (peace be upon her) recognized them as soon as she saw them and clung to Adam (peace be upon him). Adam (peace be upon him) said to her, “Move back; it is because of you that these matters have come upon me. Leave the way for me and the angels of my Lord.” So the angels took his soul, bathed him, shrouded him, applied embalming materials, dug a pit and prepared a grave, performed his funeral prayer, then descended into the grave, laid him in it, leveled raw bricks over it, then came out of the grave and began to pour soil over him. After that, they said, “O children of Adam! This is the way to bury the dead.”
