musnad-ahmad/696 · Musnad Ahmad
Chapter 1
Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque and performed two light but complete rak'ahs, after which he sat down. Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said to him, "O Abu al-Yaqzan! You performed these two rak'ahs very lightly?" He replied, "Did I fall short in any of its limits?" He said, "No, but you performed them very briefly." He replied, "I hastened in these rak'ahs due to fear of forgetfulness, because I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say that a man performs prayer, but only a tenth, a ninth, an eighth, or a seventh part of it is recorded for him, until he reached the last number."

So milk was brought to him, he drank it, then advanced and was martyred.

Abdur Rahman bin Abzi says that a man came to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I am required to perform ghusl, but I cannot find water." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do not pray." Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Do you not remember that you and I were in an army, and both of us were required to perform ghusl and could not find water? So you did not pray, but I rolled in the dust and performed the prayer. Then when we came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), I mentioned this incident to him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) smiled and said, 'Clean earth would have been enough for you.' Saying this, the Prophet (ﷺ) struck his hands on the ground, blew on them, and wiped them over his face and hands." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Ammar! Fear Allah." He said, "O Commander of the Faithful! If you say so, I will never narrate this hadith again until I die." He said, "Never! We leave you to what you choose."

Abu Al-Bakhtari (may Allah have mercy on him) says that on the occasion of the Battle of Siffin, Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Bring me a cup of milk, because the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) had said, 'The last sip you will drink in this world will be a sip of milk.'"

Abd bin Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I saw Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time of the Battle of Siffin. He was an extremely old, elderly, wheat-colored, and tall man. He was holding a spear in his hand and his hands were trembling. He said, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I have fought three times carrying this flag in the company of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), and this is the fourth time. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, even if these people, while killing us, reach the peaks of Hajar, I will still believe that our reformers are on the truth and they are in error."

Qais bin ‘Abad (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked ‘Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), “O Abu’l-Yaqzan! Tell me, is the issue in which you people have become involved your own opinion, or is it a special bequest from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ)?” He replied, “The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) did not give us any special bequest that he did not give to the general people. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘There will be twelve hypocrites in my Ummah; they will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance until a camel enters the eye of a needle. Among them, eight will be those whom your sufficiency, ‘dabīlah’, will deal with. It is a boil of fire that will appear on their shoulders and will pierce through to their chests.’”

It is narrated from Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I came to my family at night and my hands were cracked, so they rubbed saffron on my hands. In the morning, I presented myself before the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) and greeted him, but he neither replied to my greeting nor welcomed me. Rather, he said, "Go and wash it off." I went and washed it, but when I returned, some saffron still remained. So this time too, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) neither replied to my greeting nor welcomed me, but said, "Go and wash it off." So this time I washed it thoroughly, and then presented myself and greeted him. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) replied to my greeting and welcomed me, and said, "The angels of mercy do not come near the funeral of a disbeliever, a person who has applied saffron, or a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub). And the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) has given concession to a person in a state of major ritual impurity to perform ablution and then sleep or eat and drink."

Abdur Rahman bin Abzi narrates that a man came to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I am required to perform ghusl but I cannot find water." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do not perform the prayer." Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Do you not remember that you and I were in an army, and both of us were required to perform ghusl and could not find water? So you did not perform the prayer, while I rolled in the dust and performed the prayer. Then when we came to the service of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), I mentioned this incident to the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), and the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this.' Saying this, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) struck his hands on the earth, blew on them, and then wiped them over his face and hands."

It is narrated from Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) camped at a place with an army during the last part of the night. The noble wife of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), was also with him. That same night, her ivory necklace broke and fell. The people stopped to search for her necklace. This continued until the break of dawn, and the people did not have any water (to perform ablution for prayer). On this occasion, Allah Almighty revealed the concession in ablution, that is, the command to perform tayammum with pure earth. Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his daughter Aisha Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), "By Allah! I did not know that you are so blessed; Allah has revealed a concession upon us because of you." So we struck the earth once for the face and once for the hands up to the shoulders and armpits.

Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered to us an extremely eloquent and concise sermon. When he descended from the pulpit, a man from the Quraysh said, "O Abu al-Yaqzan! You have delivered a very eloquent and concise sermon; it would have been excellent if you had spoken at greater length." He replied, "The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) forbade lengthy sermons."

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) once said from the pulpit of Kufa that he suffered from the issue of the discharge of madhi, and because of this he felt shy to ask the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) about this matter, as the Prophet’s daughter was married to him. So he asked Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) to inquire about this issue. Ammar asked, and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) replied that in such a case, performing wudu is sufficient.

You performed these two rak'ahs very lightly?" He replied, "Did I fall short in any of its limits?" He said, "No, but you performed them very briefly." He replied, "I hastened in these rak'ahs due to forgetfulness, because I heard the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) say that a man performs prayer but only a tenth, a ninth, an eighth, or a seventh part of it is allotted to him, until he reached the last number."
