Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when Hajjaj attacked Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was about to set out with the intention of Hajj. Someone said to him, “We fear that this year there will be fighting among the people and you may be prevented from reaching the Sacred Sanctuary.” Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: “In the person of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) you have the best example. If any obstacle comes before me, I will do what the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) did. I make you witnesses that I have made the intention for ‘Umrah.” After that, he set out, and when he reached the place of Bayda’, he said, “The matter of Hajj and ‘Umrah is the same, so I make you witnesses that I have now made the intention for Hajj along with my ‘Umrah.” Then he bought a sacrificial animal from the place of Qudayd and proceeded to Makkah Mukarramah. Upon reaching there, he performed the Tawaf of the House of Allah, performed Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and did not add anything to it. He did not offer a sacrifice nor did he shave or shorten his hair, and he did not consider anything lawful for himself until the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah. On the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah, he offered the sacrifice and had his head shaved, and he held the opinion that he had already performed the Tawaf for both Hajj and ‘Umrah at the beginning. And he said: “The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) did likewise.”
