Musnad Ahmad Hadith 6339

It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw ‘Atarid selling silk garments. He went to the court of the Messenger and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I saw ‘Atarid selling silk garments. If you were to buy one of these garments, you could wear it before delegations and on the occasions of Eid and Jumu‘ah." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: "This is worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter." After some time, some silk garments arrived for the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) from somewhere. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) gave one of these garments to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), one to Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him), and sent one to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). And he said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Tear it and distribute its scarves among the women." Meanwhile, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the court of the Messenger and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I heard you say what you said about silk, and then you sent this garment to me?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I did not send it to you so that you would wear it, but so that you could sell it." When Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) wore that garment and went out, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) began to look at him intently. When Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) was staring at him, he said, "O Messenger of Allah! You are the one who made me wear this garment." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Tear it and distribute scarves among the women," or as the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said.
