Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him), who was the freed slave of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), says: Once, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was walking along a road when the sound of a shepherd’s singing and musical instrument reached his ears. He put his fingers in his ears and left that path, and at intervals he kept asking me, “Nafi’, can you still hear the sound?” If I replied “yes,” he kept walking, until when I said “no,” he removed his hands from his ears and brought his mount back onto the road. He then said, “I saw the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) do the same when he heard the sound of a shepherd’s singing and musical instrument.”
