English translation

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa’, I set out with the Prophet (ﷺ) riding on my weak camel. On the return journey, the riders moved ahead and I was left behind, until the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me and said: “Jabir, what has happened to you?” I replied: “O Messenger of Allah! My camel has become slow.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Make it sit down.” Then the Prophet (ﷺ) himself made it sit down and said: “Give me the stick in your hand.” “Break a branch from that tree and give it to me.” I did so. The Prophet (ﷺ) pricked it a few times and said: “Now ride it.” So I mounted it. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it was now competing with the other camels. The Prophet (ﷺ) spoke to me and said: “Jabir, will you sell me your camel?” I replied: “O Messenger of Allah! I give it to you as a gift.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No, sell it to me.” I said: “Then tell me its price.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I will take it for one dirham.” I said: “No, that would be a loss.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Two dirhams,” but I still refused. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept increasing until he reached one uqiyah. Then I said: “I am pleased.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Are you pleased?” I said: “Yes, it is yours.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I have taken it.” A little while later, he asked me: “Jabir, have you married?” I replied: “Yes.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “To a virgin or a previously married woman?” I said: “To a previously married woman.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Why not a virgin, so you could play with her and she could play with you?” I replied: “O Messenger of Allah! My father was martyred at the battle of Uhud and left behind seven daughters, so I married a woman who could look after them.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “You have done well.” Then he said: “If we reach a high hill, we will slaughter a camel and stay there for a day. When the women know of our arrival, they will shake out the bedding.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, we do not have such sheets.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Soon you will have them. And when you reach home, you may go near your wife.” So, when we reached a high hill, it happened as he said, and in the evening we entered Madinah. I told my wife the whole story and what the Prophet (ﷺ) had said to me. She said: “Very good, with pleasure.” In the morning, I took hold of the camel’s head, brought it, and made it sit at the door of the Prophet (ﷺ), and I myself went and sat in the mosque. The Prophet (ﷺ) came out and saw it, and asked the people: “Whose camel is this?” They said: “O Messenger of Allah! Jabir has brought it.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Where is Jabir himself?” I was called, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Nephew, this camel is yours, take it.” And he called Bilal and ordered him: “Take Jabir with you and give him one uqiyah of silver.” So I went with him, and he gave me one uqiyah, and even a little more. By Allah, it remained with us until the people took it on the day of Harrah.
