It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we reached the valley of Hunain, we descended into a hollow valley of Tihamah. We were descending into it, slipping as we went. It was morning, and the enemy's people were lying in wait for us in the passes, on the edges, and in narrow places. They had come united and well-prepared. By Allah, we were still descending when they did not give us a chance to gather ourselves, and all their armies attacked us together. People began to retreat in defeat, and no one cared for anyone else. Meanwhile, the Prophet (ﷺ) moved to the right side and began calling out to the people, "O people, come to me! I am the Messenger of Allah! I am Muhammad bin Abdullah!" At that time, even the camels were running here and there, and very few of the Muhajirun, Ansar, and members of the Prophet's household remained with him. Among those who stood firm were Abu Bakr and Umar, and among the Ahl al-Bayt were Ali and Abbas, his son Fadl, Abu Sufyan bin Harith, Rabi'ah bin Harith, Ayman bin Ubaid (who was the son of Umm Ayman), and Usamah bin Zaid. Meanwhile, a man from Banu Hawazin was riding a red camel, holding a black flag tied to the tip of a long spear. He was ahead of the people, and the rest of Hawazin were following him. Whenever he found someone, he would strike him with his spear, and when he saw no one, he would raise it for those behind him, and they would follow him. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that while that man from Banu Hawazin, who was the standard-bearer, was still mounted on his camel and doing what he was doing, suddenly he encountered Ali and an Ansari. Both of them pursued him. Ali struck the heels of his camel from behind so that it fell on its tail, and the Ansari leapt upon him and struck him so that his foot was cut up to half his shin. He fell from his mount, and the people fled. By Allah, people ran wherever they could to save themselves from defeat, but in the end, they were captured and brought to the Prophet (ﷺ).
