We all make mistakes. It is part of us being human to make them. What differentiates one human from another is Recognizing our mistakes and sins after committing them which is one of Allah’s blessings. It is a form of guidance for A Muslim who shall always repent by making Dua For Forgiveness for sins which they might have made in life. as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who continue to repent.”[At-Tirmizi]

Allah who is Al-Ghafoor. He forgives abundantly and has no limit to His forgiveness and the Most Merciful. His door of repentance is always open. He commands us to seek forgiveness and never lose hope in His mercy.

Asking for forgiveness is not limited to only when we think we know we committed a sin. You can ask for forgiveness without knowing the things you have done wrong. So much so that our Prophet (ﷺ) In a hadith, Abu Hurairah r.a. was reported: 

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying.” By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.” [Imam Al-Bukhari]

Muslims are encouraged to acknowledge their sins, turn to Allah in humility, and seek His mercy and forgiveness. 1st Dua

Transliteration

Rabbana fa-ghfir lana zunuubana wa-kaffir anna sayyi-aatina wa-tafawwafaa maal-abrar

in Arabic

رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الأَبْرَارِ

Meaning

Our Lord! Forgive our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die. ”Quran [3:193]

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْلَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفُ رَّحِيم

Meaning

Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who preceded us in faith, and do not allow any resentments into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Ever Gracious, Most Merciful. Quran [59:10]

Transliteration

Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa-in lam taghfir lana wa-tarhamna la-nakunanna minal-khasirin

in Arabic

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْلَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الخَاسِرِينَ

Meaning

“Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be lost.” Quran [7:23]

4th Dua

Transliteration

Rabbanaaa innanaaa aamannaa faghfir lanaa zunoobanaa wa qinaa ‘azaaban Naar

in Arabic

 رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Meaning

“Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive our sins and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”Quran [3:16]

laaa ilaaha illaaa Anta Subhaanaka innee kuntu minaz zaalimeen

 لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Meaning

“There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.” Quran [21:87]

1st Dua for Forgiveness

Transliteration

Subhaana-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Astaghfirullaha, wa atuubu ilaihi

in Arabic

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Meaning

Glory be to Allah (Allah is free from imperfection), and I begin with praising Him. I beg forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance. [Muslim]

2nd Dua for forgiveness

Transliteration

Rabbighfir lee wa tub ‘alayya ‘innaka ‘Antat-Tawwaabul-Ghafoor

in Arabic

رَبِّ اغْفِـرْ لي، وَتُبْ عَلَـيَّ، إِنَّكَ أَنْـتَ التَّـوّابُ الغَـفُورُ

Meaning

My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance, You are the Ever-Relenting, the All-Forgiving.

3rd Dua for Forgiveness

Transliteration

Allaahum-maghfir lee, warhamnee, wahdinee, wajburnee, wa ‘aafinee, warzuqnee, warfa’nee

in Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَاجْبُرْنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي، وَارْفَعْنِي

Meaning

O Allah forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, support me, protect me, provide for me and elevate me. [At-Tirmidhi]

4th Dua for Forgiveness

Transliteration

Allahumma inni as-aluka fi’lal-khairaat, wa tarkal-munkarat, wa hubbal-masaakiin, wa an-taghfira lii wa tarhamanii

in Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فِعْلَ الخَيْرَاتِ وَتَرْكَ المُنْكَرَاتِ وَحُبَّ المَسَاكِينِ وَأَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي وَ تَرْحَمَنِي

Meaning

O Allah, I ask of You (to grant me) the observance of good deeds, the abandonment of evil deeds and love for the poor, and (I ask You) that You forgive me, and have mercy upon me.[Abu Dawud]

5th Dua

Transliteration

Allahumma-ghfir lii maa qaddamtu wa maa akh-khortu wa maa asrortu wa maa a’lantu wa maa anta a’lamu bihi minnii, anta Al-Muqaddimu wa anta Al-Muakh-khiru wa anta alaa kulli shai-in qadir

in Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ المُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ المُؤَخِّرُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِير

Meaning

O, Allah! Forgive me for those sins which I committed in the past and that which I may commit in the future, the sins that I have committed in privacy or in public, and all the sins of which You are better aware of it than I am of myself. You are The One who brings forward and reprieves as You wish and indeed You are over all things capable. [Muslim]

Astaghfirullah

Astagfirullah is the best Dua for forgiveness that can be easily memorized and can be recited anytime.

Saying Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah) is the Sunnah of our Prophet (ﷺ) to seek Istighfar 100 times daily. It just takes a few moments to recite Istighar a hundred times a day.

There are plenty of benefits to reciting Astagfirullah on a daily basis. And most of all, Allah will not punish a Muslim while he/she seeks forgiveness. [Surah al-Anfal: 33]
