Hadith of Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her)

حَدِيثُ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ (١)، ٢٠٧٨٩ - حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، قَالَتْ: كُنَّا نَمْنَعُ عَوَاتِقَنَا أَنْ يَخْرُجْنَ، فَقَدِمَتِ امْرَأَةٌ، فَنَزَلَتْ قَصْرَ بَنِي خَلَفٍ، فَحَدَّثَتْ أَنَّ أُخْتَهَا كَانَتْ تَحْتَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَدْ غَزَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ غَزْوَةً، قَالَتْ: أُخْتِي غَزَوْتُ مَعَهُ سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ، قَالَتْ: كُنَّا نُدَاوِي الْكَلْمَى، وَنَقُومُ عَلَى الْمَرْضَى، فَسَأَلَتْ أُخْتِي رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَتْ: هَلْ عَلَى إِحْدَانَا بَأْسٌ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ أَنْ لَا تَخْرُجَ؟ فَقَالَ: " لِتُلْبِسْهَا صَاحِبَتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا، وَلْتَشْهَدِ (٢) الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ "، قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا قَدِمَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ فَسَأَلْتُهَا، أَوْ سَأَلْنَاهَا، هَلْ سَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: كَذَا وَكَذَا؟، قَالَتْ: وَكَانَتْ لَا تَذْكُرُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (٣) إِلَّا قَالَتْ: بِيَبَا، فَقَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، بِيَبَا، قَالَ: " لِتَخْرُجِ، ، الْعَوَاتِقُ ذَوَاتُ الْخُدُورِ، أَوْ قَالَتْ: الْعَوَاتِقُ وَذَوَاتُ الْخُدُورِ، وَالْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ، وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَيَعْتَزِلْنَ (١) الْحُيَّضُ الْمُصَلَّى "، فَقُلْتُ لِأُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ: الْحَائِضُ؟ ‍، فَقَالَتْ: " أَوَ لَيْسَ يَشْهَدْنَ عَرَفَةَ وَتَشْهَدُ كَذَا، وَتَشْهَدُ كَذَا؟ " (٢)، ،

Hafsa bint Sirin says that we used to prevent our young girls from going out. During that time, a woman came and stayed at Qasr bin Khalaf. She told us that her sister was married to a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), who had participated in twelve battles with the Prophet (ﷺ), and my sister says, "I also took part in them." My sister said, "We used to treat the wounded and take care of the sick." Then once my sister asked the Prophet (ﷺ), "If one of us does not have a cloak and cannot go out for the Eid prayer, will there be any sin on her?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Her friend should share her cloak with her, and she should also be present at the time of goodness and the Muslims' supplication." Hafsa bint Sirin says, "Then when Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) came, we asked her, and she said, 'Did you hear the Prophet (ﷺ) say something like this?'" Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) had a habit that whenever she mentioned the Prophet (ﷺ), she would always say, "May my father be sacrificed for him." So she said even now, "Yes, may my father be sacrificed for him." She said, "Young veiled girls and menstruating women should also go out for the prayer so that they may participate in goodness and the Muslims' supplication. However, menstruating women should stay away from the rows of those who are praying." I asked Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the menstruating woman, and she said, "Do these women not go to Arafat and are they not present at such and such occasions?"

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ، فَقَالَ: " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا، أَوْ خَمْسًا، أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ، بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا، أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي " قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ، وَقَالَ: " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ "، قَالَ: وَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ: قَالَ: " اغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا، أَوْ خَمْسًا، أَوْ سَبْعًا "، قَالَ: وَقَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ: " مَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were washing the daughter of the Prophet (ﷺ), Zainab. The Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and said, "Wash her an odd number of times, three or more, and if you think appropriate, mix lote tree leaves in the water. In the end, apply camphor to her." And when you have finished with these things, inform me." So when we finished, we informed the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) threw a lower garment towards us and said, "Wrap it around her body first, starting from the head." Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says, "We combed Zainab's hair and made it into three braids."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ فِيمَا أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا عِنْدَ الْبَيْعَةِ أَنْ: " لَا تَنُحْنَ "، فَمَا وَفَتْ مِنَّا غَيْرُ خَمْسِ نِسْوَةٍ (١)، ،

Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that among the conditions which the Prophet (ﷺ) set when taking our pledge of allegiance was also this condition that you will not wail, but except for five women, none of us fulfilled this promise.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، وَيَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ (١) عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: " غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ، أَخْلُفُهُمْ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ، وَأَصْنَعُ لَهُمُ الطَّعَامَ، وَأَقُومُ عَلَى مَرْضَاهُمْ، وَأُدَاوِي جَرْحَاهُمْ " (٢)،

Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I participated in seven battles along with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I used to stay in the tents and prepare food for the Mujahideen, take care of the sick, and treat the wounded.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، وَيَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي، أَنْ، ، نُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ، وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ، وَالْحُيَّضَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ، وَيَوْمَ النَّحْرِ، فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى، وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، قَالَ: قِيلَ: أَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ، قَالَ: " فَتُلْبِسْهَا (١) أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا " (٢)،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "May my parents be sacrificed for them! Young veiled girls and menstruating women should go out for the prayer so that they may participate in goodness and the occasion of the Muslims’ supplication. However, menstruating women should stay away from the rows of those who are praying." Someone asked, "Tell us, if a woman does not have a cloak, what should she do?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Her sister should cover her with her own cloak."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطُّفَاوِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، وَيَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ يَزِيدُ: عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ، " لَا تُحِدُّ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ، إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ، فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا، وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا عَصْبًا، وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ، وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا عِنْدَ طُهْرِهَا، قَالَ يَزِيدُ: أَدْنَى (٣) طُهْرِهَا، فَإِذَا طَهُرَتْ مِنْ مَحِيْضِهَا، نُبْذَةً مِنْ، ، قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: No woman should observe mourning for any deceased person for more than three days except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days. She should not wear clothes dyed with any color except 'asab, nor apply kohl, nor use perfume, except when she becomes pure after her menstrual period, then she may apply a little 'asab or a perfume called azfar.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: لَمَّا مَاتَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " اغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْخَامِسَةِ كَافُورًا، أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ، فَإِذَا غَسَّلْتُنَّهَا فَأَعْلِمْنَنِي "، قَالَتْ: فَأَعْلَمْنَاهُ، فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ، وَقَالَ: " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " (١)،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were washing the daughter of the Prophet (ﷺ), Zainab. The Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and said, "Wash her an odd number of times, three or more if you think appropriate, and mix lote tree leaves in the water. In the end, apply camphor to her." And when you have finished with these things, inform me." So when we finished, we informed the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) threw a sheet towards us and said, "Wrap her body in this, starting from the head."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: {يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلَى أَنْ، ، لَا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا} [الممتحنة: ١٢] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {وَلَا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ} [الممتحنة: ١٢] ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ مِنْهُ النِّيَاحَةُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِلَّا آلَ فُلَانٍ، فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ كَانُوا أَسْعَدُونِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَلَا بُدَّ لِي مِنْ أَنْ أُسْعِدَهُمْ، قَالَتْ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِلَّا آلَ فُلَانٍ " (١)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when this verse was revealed, "They will pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate..." etc., wailing was also included in it. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, exempt the people of such-and-such family, because they helped me in wailing during the time of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to help them as well." So the Prophet (ﷺ) exempted them.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْكِلَابِيُّ أَبُو يَعْقُوبَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، جَمَعَ نِسَاءَ الْأَنْصَارِ فِي بَيْتٍ، ثُمَّ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، قَامَ عَلَى الْبَابِ، فَسَلَّمَ، فَرَدَدْنَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ، فَقَالَ: أَنَا رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللهِ إِلَيْكُنَّ، قُلْنَا: مَرْحَبًا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ، وَرَسُولِ رَسُولِ اللهِ، قَالَ: " تُبَايِعْنَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا تُشْرِكْنَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا، وَلَا تَزْنِينَ، وَلَا تَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلَادَكُنَّ، وَلَا تَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ تَفْتَرِينَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُنَّ وَأَرْجُلِكُنَّ، وَلَا تَعْصِينَهُ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ؟ "، قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ، فَمَدَدْنَا أَيْدِيَنَا مِنْ دَاخِلِ الْبَيْتِ، وَمَدَّ يَدَهُ مِنْ خَارِجِ الْبَيْتِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ، وَأَمَرَنَا بِالْعِيدَيْنِ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِيهِ الْعُتَّقَ، وَالْحُيَّضَ، وَنَهَى عَنْ اتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ، وَلَا جُمُعَةَ عَلَيْنَا "، وَسَأَلْتُهَا عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: {وَلَا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ} [الممتحنة: ١٢] ، قَالَتْ: " نُهِينَا عَنِ النِّيَاحَةِ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, he gathered the women of the Ansar in a house and then sent Umar to them. He came and stood at the door of the house and greeted them with salam. The women replied. Umar said, "I have come to you as the messenger of the Prophet (ﷺ)." We said, "Welcome to the Prophet (ﷺ) and his messenger." He said, "Do you pledge that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not commit adultery, will not kill your children, will not fabricate any slander, and will not disobey the Prophet (ﷺ) in any good work?" We agreed and extended our hands from inside the house. Umar extended his hand from outside and said, "O Allah, bear witness." The Prophet (ﷺ) also commanded that on the two Eids, unmarried and menstruating women should also come out for the prayer, and he forbade us from accompanying funeral processions, and that Jumu'ah is not obligatory upon us. A woman asked Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the meaning of "wala ya'seenaka fi ma'roof," so she replied that in this, we were forbidden from wailing.

حَدَّثَنَا غَسَّانُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زَيْدٍ ثَابِتُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: " كُنْتُ فِيمَنْ بَايَعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَكَانَ فِيمَا أَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا أَنْ لَا نَنُوحَ، وَلَا نُحَدِّثَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ إِلَّا مَحْرَمًا " (١)، ،

Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I was among those women who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Among the conditions that the Prophet (peace be upon him) set when taking our pledge was that you will not wail (over the dead) and you will not speak to any man without a mahram.

حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ: " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ، وَالْحُيَّضَ، وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ، فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ، فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى، وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ، وَالدَّعْوَةَ مَعَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to command us that young girls and women in their menses should also go out for the Eid prayer so that they may participate in goodness and the occasion of the Muslims’ supplication, but the women in their menses should stay away from the rows of those performing the prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: أَخَذَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ غُسْلَهُ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: " غَسَّلْنَا ابْنَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَغْسِلَهَا بِالسِّدْرِ ثَلَاثًا، فَإِنْ أَنْجَتْ وَإِلَّا فَخَمْسًا، فَإِنْ أَنْجَتْ وَإِلَّا فَأَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ "، قَالَتْ: " فَرَأَيْنَا أَنَّ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ سَبْعٌ " (١)،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were washing the daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Zainab. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to us and said, "Wash her three or five or more times, but in odd numbers. If you think it appropriate, add lotus leaves to the water." We considered seven to be appropriate.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ، قَالَ: نُبِّئْتُ أَنَّ أُمَّ عَطِيَّةَ، قَالَتْ: " تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَغْسِلَهَا ثَلَاثًا، أَوْ خَمْسًا، أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ، وَأَنْ نَجْعَلَ فِي الْغَسْلَةِ الْآخِرَةِ (٢) شَيْئًا مِنْ سِدْرٍ وَكَافُورٍ " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Zainab, passed away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to us and instructed us to give her a bath and said: "Wash her three times or more, in odd numbers. If you think it appropriate, mix lote tree leaves in the water, and at the end, apply camphor to her."
