Hadith of Qatadah ibn Milhan (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ مِلْحَانَ، ٢٠٣١٦ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ مِلْحَانَ الْقَيْسِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُ (١) بِصِيَامِ لَيَالِي الْبِيضِ: ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ، وَأَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ، وَخَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ، وَقَالَ: " هِيَ كَصَوْمِ الدَّهْرِ " (٢)،

It is narrated from Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us to fast on the white days, that is, the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month, whose reward is equal to fasting for the entire month.

حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَ أَبِي، عَنِ أَبِي (٣) الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ عِنْدَ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ مِلْحَانَ حِينَ حُضِرَ، فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ فِي أَقْصَى الدَّارِ، قَالَ: فَأَبْصَرْتُهُ فِي وَجْهِ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: وَكُنْتُ إِذَا رَأَيْتُهُ كَأَنَّ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ الدِّهَانَ، قَالَ: " وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ "، (٤)، ، •

Abu Alaa bin Umair says that I was present with Qatadah bin Milhan when the time of his death approached. At that moment, a man passed by from the farthest corner of the house; I saw him in front of Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). Whenever I looked at Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), it seemed as if oil had been applied to his face. In fact, the Prophet (ﷺ) had passed his blessed hand over his face.

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ، وَهُرَيْمٌ أَبُو حَمْزَةَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ (١)،

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي قَيْسِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَأْمُرُهُمْ بِصِيَامِ أَيَّامِ الْبِيضِ، وَيَقُولُ: " " هُنَّ (٢) صِيَامُ الشَّهْرِ "، أَوْ قَالَ: " الدَّهْرِ " (٣)،

It is narrated from Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us to fast on the white days, that is, the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month, which in reward are equal to fasting the entire month.
