Hadith of Kaysan (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ كَيْسَانَ (١)، ١٨٩٦٠ - حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَّجِرُ بِالْخَمْرِ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَنَّهُ أَقْبَلَ مِنَ الشَّامِ وَمَعَهُ خَمْرٌ فِي الزِّقَاقِ، يُرِيدُ بِهَا التِّجَارَةَ، فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي جِئْتُكَ بِشَرَابٍ جَيِّدٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " يَا كَيْسَانُ، إِنَّهَا قَدْ حُرِّمَتْ بَعْدَكَ " قَالَ: أَفَأَبِيعُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّهَا قَدْ حُرِّمَتْ، وَحُرِّمَ ثَمَنُهَا ". فَانْطَلَقَ كَيْسَانُ إِلَى الزِّقَاقِ فَأَخَذَ بِأَرْجُلِهَا، ثُمَّ أَهْرَاقَهَا (٢)، ،

It is narrated from Kaysan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to trade in wine during the time of the Prophet. Once, he returned from Syria with many jars of wine which he had brought for trade. He presented himself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! I have brought very fine wine to you." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Kaysan! That has become forbidden for you behind your back." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Can I sell it?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Wine has become forbidden, and so has its price." So Kaysan returned and, striking the jars with his feet, broke them and spilled the wine.
