Hadith of Ghudayf ibn al-Harith

حَدِيثُ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ (١)، ١٦٩٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ (٢)، ، بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنْ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، أَوِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ غُضَيْفٍ، قَالَ: مَا نَسِيتُ مِنَ الْأَشْيَاءِ مَا نَسِيتُ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " وَاضِعًا يَمِينَهُ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Ghudayf bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) that I may forget everything, but I cannot forget this: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in prayer, placing his right hand over his left hand.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ غُضَيْفٍ، أَوْ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: مَا نَسِيتُ مِنَ الْأَشْيَاءِ لَمْ أَنْسَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " وَاضِعًا يَمِينَهُ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ " (١)،

It is narrated from Ghudayf bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) that I may forget everything, but I cannot forget this: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in prayer, placing his right hand over his left hand.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي الْمَشْيَخَةُ، أَنَّهُمْ حَضَرُوا غُضَيْفَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ الثُّمَالِيَّ، حِينَ اشْتَدَّ سَوْقُهُ، فَقَالَ: " هَلْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ يَقْرَأُ يس؟ " قَالَ: فَقَرَأَهَا صَالِحُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ السَّكُونِيُّ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ مِنْهَا قُبِضَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ الْمَشْيَخَةُ يَقُولُونَ: إِذَا قُرِئَتْ عِنْدَ الْمَيِّتِ خُفِّفَ عَنْهُ، ، بِهَا (١) قَالَ صَفْوَانُ: " وَقَرَأَهَا عِيسَى بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ (٢) عِنْدَ ابْنِ مَعْبَدٍ "،

It is narrated from multiple elders that they were present with Ghudhayf bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) (during his illness of death). When his soul had difficulty departing, he began to say, "Has anyone among you recited Surah Yaseen?" Upon this, Salih bin Shurayh Sakuni began to recite Surah Yaseen. When he reached its fortieth verse, his soul was taken. Since then, the elders have been saying that when Surah Yaseen is recited near the deceased, it makes the departure of the soul easier. Safwan says that Isa bin Mu'tamir also recited Surah Yaseen near Ibn Ma'bad.

حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الرَّحَبِيِّ، عَنْ غُضَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الثُّمَالِيِّ، قَالَ: بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا أَسْمَاءَ، إِنَّا قَدْ جَمَعْنَا (٣) النَّاسَ عَلَى أَمْرَيْنِ، قَالَ: وَمَا هُمَا؟ قَالَ: رَفْعُ (٤) الْأَيْدِي عَلَى الْمَنَابِرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، وَالْقَصَصُ بَعْدَ الصُّبْحِ وَالْعَصْرِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّهُمَا أَمْثَلُ، ، بِدْعَتِكُمْ عِنْدِي، وَلَسْتُ مُجِيبَكَ إِلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْهُمَا قَالَ: لِمَ؟ قَالَ: لِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَا أَحْدَثَ قَوْمٌ بِدْعَةً إِلَّا رُفِعَ مِثْلُهَا مِنَ السُّنَّةِ " فَتَمَسُّكٌ بِسُنَّةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ إِحْدَاثِ بِدْعَةٍ (١)، ،

It is narrated from Ghudayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abdul Malik bin Marwan sent a message to me saying, "O Abu Asma! We have united the people upon two things." I asked, "Which two things?" He replied, "Raising the hands on the pulpit on Friday and delivering admonition after the Fajr and Asr prayers." Ghudayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "In my view, these two things are your most exemplary innovations. I do not accept even one of them." Abdul Malik asked the reason, so he replied, "The reason is that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whenever a people introduce an innovation, an equal amount of Sunnah is taken away from them. Therefore, holding firmly to the Sunnah is better than introducing an innovation.'"
