Hadith of al-Sa'b ibn Jathamah (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ (١)، ١٦٤٢٢ - حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ قَالَ: مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا بِالْأَبْوَاءِ أَوْ بِوَدَّانَ، فَأَهْدَيْتُ لَهُ مِنْ لَحْمِ حِمَارِ وَحْشٍ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيَّ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى فِي وَجْهِي الْكَرَاهَةَ (٢) قَالَ: " إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِنَا رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ وَلَكِنَّا حُرُمٌ "، وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: " لَا حِمَى إِلَّا لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ "، وَسُئِلَ عَنْ أَهْلِ الدَّارِ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ يُبَيَّتُونَ فَيُصَابُ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ وَذَرَارِيِّهِمْ، فَقَالَ: " هُمْ مِنْهُمْ "، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ الزُّهْرِيُّ: ثُمَّ نَهَى عَنْ ذَلِكَ بَعْدُ (٣)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Sa'b bin Jathamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by me while I was at the place of Abwa or Waddan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was in the state of Ihram. I presented to him the meat of a wild donkey as a gift, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned it to me. When he saw signs of sadness on my face, he said: "There is no reason for returning it except that we are in the state of Ihram." And I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: "It is not permissible for anyone except Allah and His Messenger to declare any area as a sanctuary." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the families of those polytheists upon whom a night raid is carried out, and during which their women and children are also killed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "They (the women and children) are also among the polytheists (and will be counted among them)."

قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، أَنَّهُ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ بِالْأَبْوَاءِ أَوْ بِوَدَّانَ حِمَارًا وَحْشِيًّا، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى مَا فِي وَجْهِي قَالَ: " إِنَّا لَمْ نَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنَّا حُرُمٌ " (١)،

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، أَنَّ ابْنَ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ،، ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قِيلَ لَهُ: لَوْ أَنَّ خَيْلًا أَغَارَتْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَصَابَتْ مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ؟ قَالَ: " هُمْ مِنْ آبَائِهِمْ " (١)،

It is narrated from Sa'b bin Jathamah, may Allah be pleased with him, that it was asked from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about the families of those polytheists upon whom a night raid is carried out, and during that time their women and children are also killed? It is narrated from Sa'b bin Jathamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: It is not permissible for anyone except Allah and His Messenger to declare any area as a prohibited area.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ صَعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: مَرَّ بِي وَأَنَا بِالْأَبْوَاءِ أَوْ بِوَدَّانَ فَأَهْدَيْتُ لَهُ حِمَارَ وَحْشٍ، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيَّ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،، ، الْكَرَاهِيَةَ فِي وَجْهِي قَالَ: " إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِنَا رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ، وَلَكِنَّا حُرُمٌ (١) "، قُلْتُ لِابْنِ شِهَابٍ: الْحِمَارُ عَقِيرٌ، قَالَ: لَا أَدْرِي،،

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ، أَنَّهُ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِمَارَ وَحْشٍ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ، فَذَكَرَهُ (٢)، ،

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
