Hadith of Sawdah bint Zam‘ah (may Allah be pleased with her)

حَدِيثُ سَوْدَةَ بِنْتِ زَمْعَةَ (١)، ٢٧٤١٧ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ الْعَمِّيُّ أَبُو عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ مَوْلًى لِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، يُقَالُ لَهُ يُوسُفُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَوِ الزُّبَيْرُ (٢) بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ سَوْدَةَ بِنْتِ زَمْعَةَ، قَالَتْ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ أَبِي شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَحُجَّ قَالَ: " أَرَأَيْتَكَ لَوْ كَانَ عَلَى أَبِيكَ دَيْنٌ فَقَضَيْتَهُ عَنْهُ قُبِلَ مِنْكَ؟ " قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " فَاللهُ أَرْحَمُ حُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيكَ " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Saudah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man came to the Prophet’s court and said, “My father has become old and cannot perform Hajj (what is the ruling for him?)” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Tell me, if your father had a debt and you paid it off, would it not be accepted?” He replied, “Certainly, it would be accepted.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Then Allah is Most Merciful; perform Hajj on behalf of your father.”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ (١) ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ سَوْدَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: " مَاتَتْ شَاةٌ لَنَا فَدَبَغْنَا مَسْكَهَا فَمَا زِلْنَا نَنْبِذُ (٢) بِهِ حَتَّى صَارَ شَنًّا " (٣)، ،

It is narrated from Saudah (may Allah be pleased with her) that one of our goats died, so we tanned its skin and continued to make nabidh in it until it became old and dried up.

حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ مَوْلًى لِآلِ الزُّبَيْرِ، قَالَ: إِنَّ بِنْتَ زَمْعَةَ قَالَتْ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ أَبِي زَمْعَةَ مَاتَ وَتَرَكَ أُمَّ وَلَدٍ لَهُ، وَإِنَّا كُنَّا نَظُنُّهَا بِرَجُلٍ، وَإِنَّهَا وَلَدَتْ فَخَرَجَ وَلَدُهَا يُشْبِهُ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي ظَنَنَّاهَا بِهِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَهَا: " أَمَّا أَنْتِ فَاحْتَجِبِي مِنْهُ، فَلَيْسَ بِأَخِيكِ، وَلَهُ الْمِيرَاثُ " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Saudah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) that once I presented myself before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: “My father Zam’ah has passed away and he has left behind an umm walad slave woman, whom we suspect with a certain man, because she has given birth to a child who resembles that man whom we suspect her with.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Observe veiling from that boy, for he is not your brother, but he will receive inheritance.”
