Hadith of Asma’ bint ‘Umays (may Allah be pleased with her)

حَدِيثُ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ (١)، * ٢٧٠٨٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ مَوْلًى لِمَعْمَرٍ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " بِمَاذَا كُنْتِ تَسْتمَشْينَ؟ (٢) "، قَالَتْ: بِالشُّبْرُمِ قَالَ: " حَارٌّ جَارٌّ (٣) "، ثُمَّ اسْتَشْفَيْتُ بِالسَّنَا قَالَ: " لَوْ كَانَ شَيْءٌ يَشْفِي مِنَ الْمَوْتِ كَانَ السَّنَا، أَوِ السَّنَا شِفَاءٌ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ " (٤)، ،

It is narrated from Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (ﷺ) asked me, "Which medicine do you use as a laxative?" I replied, "Shabram" (which is the name of a herb). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It is very hot." Then I started using the herb called "Sana" as a laxative. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If there were a cure for death in anything, it would be in Sana."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى الْجُهَنِيِّ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَيَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَفِيقِي أَبُو مَهْلٍ (١) : كَمْ لَكِ؟ قَالَتْ: سِتَّةٌ وَثَمَانُونَ سَنَةً، قَالَ: مَا سَمِعْتِ مِنْ أَبِيكِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَتْ: حَدَّثَتْنِي أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ عُمَيْسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: " أَنْتَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بَعْدِي نَبِيٌّ " (٢)، ،

Musa Jahni says that once I was present in the service of Fatimah bint Ali. My companion Abu Sahl asked her, "How old are you?" She replied, "Eighty-six years." Abu Sahl asked, "Have you heard any hadith from your father?" She said, "Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): 'Your relation to me is like the relation of Harun (Aaron) to Musa (Moses), except that there will be no prophet after me.'"

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا هِلَالٌ مَوْلَانَا،، ، عَنِ أَبِي (١) عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ: عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَاتٍ أَقُولُهَا (٢) عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ: " اللهُ رَبِّي لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا " (٣)، ، .................................، ، .................................، ، .................................، ،

It is narrated from Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) taught me some words which I recite at times of distress « اللَّهُ رَبِّي, لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا ».

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا (١) مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عُتَيْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّالِثَ مِنْ قَتْلِ جَعْفَرٍ فَقَالَ: " لَا تَحِدِّي بَعْدَ يَوْمِكِ هَذَا " (٢)، ، .................................، ،

It is narrated from Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the third day after the martyrdom of Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me and said: "Do not observe mourning after today."

قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ، أَنَّهَا وَلَدَتْ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِالْبَيْدَاءِ، فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مُرْهَا فَلْتَغْتَسِلْ ثُمَّ لِتُهِلَّ " (١)، ، .................................، ،

It is narrated from Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) that Muhammad bin Abi Bakr was born at the place of Bayda. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Prophet (ﷺ), so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Tell her to perform ghusl (ritual bath) and recite the talbiyah."

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الطَّوِيلُ صَاحِبُ الْمَصَاحِفِ، أَنَّ كِلَابَ بْنَ تَلِيدٍ أَخَا بَنِي (١) سَعْدِ بْنِ لَيْثٍ أَنَّهُ بَيْنَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ مَعَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ جَاءَهُ رَسُولُ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ ابْنَ خَالَتِكَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ وَيَقُولُ: أَخْبِرْنِي كَيْفَ الْحَدِيثُ الَّذِي كُنْتَ (٢) حَدَّثْتَنِي عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ؟ فَقَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ: أَخْبِرْهُ أَنَّ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ عُمَيْسٍ أَخْبَرَتْنِي، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " لَا يَصْبِرُ عَلَى لَأْوَاءِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَشِدَّتِهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا كُنْتُ لَهُ شَفِيعًا ـ أَوْ شَهِيدًا (٣) ـ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " (٤)، ،

Kallab bin Talid, "who belonged to Banu Sa'd bin Layth," was once sitting with Sa'id bin al-Musayyib when a messenger from Nafi' bin Jubayr came to him and said, "Your nephew sends you greetings and asks about that hadith which you mentioned to me regarding Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her)?" Sa'id bin al-Musayyib replied that Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) told me that she heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: "Whoever endures the hardships and difficulties of Madinah with patience, I will intercede and bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection."

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا (١) أَبِي، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ عِيسَى الْجَزَّارِ، عَنْ أُمِّ جَعْفَرٍ بِنْتِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهَا أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ: لَمَّا أُصِيبَ جَعْفَرٌ وَأَصْحَابُهُ دَخَلَ (٢) عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ دَبَغْتُ أَرْبَعِينَ مَنِيئَةً، وَعَجَنْتُ عَجِينِي، وَغَسَّلْتُ بَنِيَّ وَدَهَنْتُهُمْ وَنَظَّفْتُهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " ائْتِينِي بِبَنِي جَعْفَرٍ "، قَالَتْ: فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهِمْ فَشَمَّهُمْ وَذَرَفَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، مَا يُبْكِيكَ؟ أَبَلَغَكَ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ وَأَصْحَابِهِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ، أُصِيبُوا، ، هَذَا الْيَوْمَ "، قَالَتْ: فَقُمْتُ أَصِيحُ وَاجْتَمَعَ إِلَيَّ النِّسَاءُ، وَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَقَالَ: " لَا تُغْفِلُوا آلَ جَعْفَرٍ مِنْ أَنْ تَصْنَعُوا لَهُمْ طَعَامًا فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ شُغِلُوا بِأَمْرِ صَاحِبِهِمْ " (١)، ، .................................، ،

It is narrated from Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) that when Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions were martyred, the Prophet (ﷺ) came to my house. At that time, I had put forty hides for tanning, had kneaded the flour, and had bathed and cleaned my children and applied oil to them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Bring Ja'far's children to me." I brought them, and the Prophet (ﷺ) began to smell them, and tears were flowing from his eyes. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, why are you crying? Has any news come regarding Ja'far and his companions?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Yes, today they have been martyred." Hearing this, I stood up and began to scream, and other women also gathered around me. The Prophet (ﷺ) left and went to his family and said: "Do not be heedless of the family of Ja'far, prepare food for them, for they are occupied with the matter of their companion."
