Hadith of Abu Basrah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ (١)، ٢٣٨٤٨ - قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: مَالِكٌ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: فَلَقِيتُ بَصْرَةَ بْنَ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيَّ، قَالَ: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَقْبَلْتَ؟ فَقُلْتُ: مِنَ الطُّورِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِ مَا خَرَجْتَ إِلَيْهِ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " لَا تُعْمَلُ الْمَطِيُّ إِلَّا إِلَى ثَلَاثَةِ مَسَاجِدَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ، وَإِلَى مَسْجِدِي، وَإِلَى مَسْجِدِ إِيلِيَاءَ أَوْ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ " يَشُكُّ (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he met Abi Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked, "Where are you coming from?" He replied that he was coming from Mount Tur. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If I had met you before your departure, you would never have undertaken that journey, because I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say: 'Mounts should not be saddled except for visiting three mosques: Masjid al-Haram, my mosque, and Masjid al-Aqsa.'"

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُبَارَكٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ (١) ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَصْرَةَ، خَرَجَ فِي رَمَضَانَ مِنَ الْإِسْكَنْدَرِيَّةِ، فَأُتِيَ بِطَعَامِهِ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: لَمْ تَغِبْ عَنَّا مَنَازِلُنَا بَعْدُ فَقَالَ: " أَتَرْغَبُونَ عَنْ سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ " قَالَ: " فَمَا زِلْنَا مُفْطِرِينَ حَتَّى بَلَغُوا مَكَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا " (٢)، ،

Yazid bin Abi Habib says that once Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out from Alexandria during the month of Ramadan. On the way, food was presented to him. Someone said to him, "Now the city is not far from here." He replied, "Are you turning away from the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ)?" The narrator says that then, until we reached such-and-such place, we continued to break the fast.

حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: لَقِيَ أَبُو بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيُّ، أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، وَهُوَ جَاءٍ مِنَ الطُّورِ فَقَالَ: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَقْبَلْتَ؟ قَالَ: مِنَ الطُّورِ صَلَّيْتُ فِيهِ قَالَ: أَمَا لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَرْحَلَ إِلَيْهِ مَا رَحَلْتَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " لَا تُشَدُّ الرِّحَالُ إِلَّا إِلَى ثَلَاثَةِ مَسَاجِدَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَمَسْجِدِي هَذَا وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى " (١)، ،

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِيِّ، أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ، خَطَبَ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ أَبَا بَصْرَةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " إِنَّ اللهَ زَادَكُمْ صَلَاةً، وَهِيَ الْوِتْرُ، فَصَلُّوهَا فِيمَا بَيْنَ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ " قَالَ أَبُو تَمِيمٍ: فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي أَبُو ذَرٍّ فَسَارَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَى أَبِي بَصْرَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: مَا قَالَ عَمْرٌو؟ قَالَ أَبُو بَصْرَةَ: أَنَا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (١)، ،

It is narrated from Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, in the morning, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and said: "Allah has added a prayer for you which is better for you than red camels." We asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Which prayer is that?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The Witr prayer, which can be offered at any time between the Isha prayer and the rising of the sun."
