Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, “Did you write this letter?” He admitted and said, “O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, there has been no change in my heart regarding faith. The real matter is that every man of the Quraysh has some supporter or family in Makkah who protects his relatives. I wrote this letter so that Allah, through it, might protect my family from some of them.” Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Allow me to strike off his neck?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Would you really kill him?” He said, “Yes, if you permit?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “How do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said, ‘Do whatever you wish, I have forgiven you.’”
