حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ النَّاجِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ نِسَاءَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلْنَهُ عَنِ الذَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ: " اجْعَلْنَهُ شِبْرًا " فَقُلْنَ: إِنَّ شِبْرًا لَا يَسْتُرُ مِنْ عَوْرَةٍ، فَقَالَ: " اجْعَلْنَهُ ذِرَاعًا "، فَكَانَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ إِذَا أَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ دِرْعًا أَرْخَتْ ذِرَاعًا فَجَعَلَتْهُ ذَيْلًا (١)، •
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Mothers of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about letting the hem (of their garments) hang down. The Prophet (ﷺ) permitted them to let the hem down by one handspan. They said that one handspan does not suffice for covering. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Then make it one cubit." Thus, when any of them wanted to make a shirt, she would let it hang down by one cubit and make its hem accordingly.
