Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once we were coming from Makkah Mukarramah with Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Hafs bin Asim and Masahq bin Amr were also with him. We kept walking until the sun set. One of them said, “Prayer.” Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) did not say anything to him. (Then another reminded him, but he also did not reply to him. Then I said to him, “Prayer.”) So he said, “I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that when he was in a hurry during travel, he would combine these two prayers. I intend to combine them as well.” So we traveled several miles, then stopped and he prayed. On another occasion, Nafi’ mentioned a quarter mile.
