Musnad Ahmad Hadith 5319

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to lease out his land during the time of the three caliphs and in the early period of the caliphate of Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). If I wished, I could also mention the blessed era of the Prophet (ﷺ). But in the later period of Amir Muawiyah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) rule, he came to know that Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade leasing land. So he went to him, and I was with him. He asked Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter, and he replied, “Yes! The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade leasing land.” Upon hearing this, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) abandoned this practice, and later, when anyone asked him about it, he would say, “Rafi’ bin Khadij is of the opinion that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade leasing land.”
