English translation

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when Sayyida Hafsa’s husband, Khunais bin Hudhafa (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and presented to him the proposal of marrying his daughter. He said, “I have no inclination towards women, but I will think about it.” After that, he met Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said the same to him, but he did not reply to me. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was more upset with him than with Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). After a few days, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) sent a marriage proposal for himself, so he married Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). Coincidentally, once he met Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said, “I presented my daughter’s marriage proposal to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he gave a clear answer, but when I presented it to you, you remained silent, because of which I was more upset with you than with Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).” Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) had mentioned Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her). I did not want to disclose the secret of the Prophet (ﷺ). If the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) had left her, I would certainly have married her.”
