English translation

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave his wife a divorce while she was in her menstrual period. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about this issue. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that he should take her back and wait until she has another menstrual period and becomes pure from it, then before approaching her, he may divorce her. This is the method by which Allah has permitted men to divorce their wives. It was the practice of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was asked about a man who divorces his wife during her menstrual period, he would say: I had given my wife one or two divorces, and the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered me to take her back and wait for another menstrual period and then for her to become pure, then before approaching her, to divorce her. But you have given your wife three divorces; you have disobeyed the command of Allah regarding how He has instructed you to divorce your wives, and your wife has become separated from you.
