Musnad Ahmad Hadith 4420

Huzail bin Shurahbil says that once a man came to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him this issue: If a person’s heirs include a daughter, a granddaughter, and a real sister, how will the inheritance be distributed? He replied: Half of the total wealth will go to the daughter and the other half to the sister, and you should go to Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him this issue as well; he will agree with and support us. So that man went to Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him the issue, also mentioning the answer of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I also give this same verdict, then I will go astray and will not remain among the rightly guided. I will give the same decision that the Prophet (ﷺ) gave: “The daughter will get half of the total wealth, the granddaughter will get one-sixth so that two-thirds are completed, and whatever remains will go to the sister.” People went to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of Ibn Mas’ud’s (may Allah be pleased with him) opinion, so he said: As long as such a great scholar is present among you, do not ask me questions.
