Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was returning from Hudaybiyyah at night, and we camped on soft ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who will keep watch over us? (Who will wake us up for Fajr?)" Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) offered himself. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What if you also fall asleep?" He replied: "I will not sleep." By coincidence, he too fell asleep until the sun had risen and so-and-so companions woke up, among them was Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He woke everyone up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also woke up and said: "Do as you used to do (perform the prayer as usual)." When the people had done so, he said: "If any of you sleeps or forgets, then do the same." Meanwhile, the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) she-camel was lost. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had it searched for, and it was found by me in such a state that its rope was entangled in a tree. I brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he happily mounted it. When revelation would descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), its effect would be very intense upon him, and we would recognize that state by seeing it. On this occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to one side and covered his blessed head with a cloth, and the state of intensity came upon him, by which we recognized that revelation was descending upon him. After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us and informed us that Surah Al-Fath had been revealed to him.
