Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that once Mu’awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a letter through me to Aisha. When I reached her and handed over the letter, she said, “Son! Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (ﷺ)?” I replied, “Why not?” She said, “Once Hafsa and I were present in the service of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘I wish there was a man with us who would talk to us.’ Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) said, ‘Shall I send someone to call Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent at first, then said, ‘No.’ I suggested calling Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), but the same happened. Then a man was called and the Prophet (ﷺ) whispered to him for a while. Shortly after, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived. The Prophet (ﷺ) turned his full attention towards him. I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say, ‘Uthman! Soon Allah will clothe you with a shirt. If the hypocrites want you to take it off, do not take it off until you meet me.’ He repeated this sentence three times. Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) says, ‘I asked her, O Mother of the Believers! Why have you not mentioned this until now?’ She replied, ‘By Allah, I had forgotten it. I did not remember it.’”
