Abu Khalaf, who was a freed slave of Banu Jumah, says that he was present with Ubaid bin Umair in the service of Ummul Momineen Aisha Siddiqa, who was near the spring of Zamzam, and at that time there was no shade anywhere else in the entire mosque except there. She said, "Abu Asim," meaning Ubaid bin Umair, "welcome! Why do you not come to meet us?" He replied, "Out of fear that you might become weary." She said, "You should not do so." Ubaid said, "At this time I have come to you to ask about a verse—how did the Prophet (peace be upon him) recite it?" She said, "Which verse?" Ubaid said, "Is the verse like this: الَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا أَتَوْا or like this: الَّذِينَ يَأْتُونَ مَا أَتَوْا?" She asked, "Which of these two recitations do you prefer?" Ubaid replied, "By Him in whose hand is my soul, I prefer one of these recitations more than the whole world and whatever is in it." She asked, "Which one is that?" Ubaid replied, "الذین یاتون ما اتوا." She said, "I bear witness that the Prophet (peace be upon him) also recited this verse in this way, and in this way the verse was revealed. But in spelling, both are the same letter (their root is the same)."
