Amr bin Maymoon Awdi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when the messenger of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), came to us in Yemen, it was the time of suhoor (pre-dawn meal). He was proclaiming the takbeer in a loud and awe-inspiring voice. Love for him became deeply rooted in my heart, so I did not separate from him until, after his death in Shaam (Syria), I had thrown earth upon his grave. May Allah’s mercy descend upon him. Then, after him, I looked for the most knowledgeable person and presented myself to Abdullah bin Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him). He said to me, “What will you do when such rulers come over you who delay the prayer from its proper time?” I said, “If I reach that time, what do you command me to do?” He said, “Perform your prayer at its appointed time, and join the rulers in prayer with the intention of nafl (supererogatory) prayer.”
