English translation

Mutarrif says that once Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, "Mutarrif! By Allah! I think that if I wish, I can narrate to you the sayings of the Prophet (ﷺ) continuously for two days, and not a single narration among them would be repeated. Then I refrain from this because some of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (ﷺ)—among whom I too used to be present in the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) and I too used to listen as they did—narrate such sayings which are not as they say. I know that they do not fall short in conveying the truth as they understand it. I fear that I too may become doubtful like them. Therefore, Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) would sometimes say in this way: 'If I narrate this hadith to you that I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say this,' then I think I am telling the truth. And sometimes, with certainty, he would say: 'I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say this.'"
