English translation

It is narrated from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said: When the funeral of a Jew, Christian, or Muslim passes in front of you, you should stand up, because you do not stand for the sake of the funeral, but for the angels who are with the funeral. Abdullah bin Sakhbara says that once we were sitting with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) waiting for a funeral, when another funeral passed by us and we stood up. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Why did you stand up?" We said, "It was you people who told us this." He asked, "What is that?" I said, "Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said: When the funeral of a Jew, Christian, or Muslim passes in front of you, you should stand up, because we do not stand for it, but for the angels present with it." Upon this, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) did this only once with a Jew. These people were People of the Book, and the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) used to emulate them. When it was prohibited, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) stopped and did not do so again.
