Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the blessed era of the Prophet (ﷺ), there was a severe heat and a solar eclipse occurred. The Prophet (ﷺ) led the companions in prayer and stood for a long time until people began to faint. Then he bowed for a long time, then raised his head and stood for a long time, and did the same again. He performed two prostrations and then stood up and led the second rak'ah in the same manner. During the prayer, he began to move backwards, and after a while, the Prophet (ﷺ) moved forward and stood in his place. On this occasion, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Everything that you have been promised, I saw during this prayer. Paradise was presented before me; if I had wanted to pluck a bunch of its fruits, I could have done so. Then Hell was also brought before me. This was the time when you saw me moving backwards, because I feared that its flames might reach you. I saw in Hell the woman with the cat, who had tied it up, neither feeding it herself nor letting it go so that it could eat the insects of the earth and fill its belly, until it died in that state. Similarly, I saw Abu Thumamah Amr bin Malik in Hell, dragging his intestines. And the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah which Allah shows you, so when they are eclipsed, perform prayer until they become clear."
