Original Arabic
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وُلِدَ لَهُ غُلَامٌ، فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ مُحَمَّدًا، فَكَأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوهُ، فَحَمَلَهُ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ، فَأَتَى بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي، وَلَا تَكَنَّوْا بِكُنْيَتِي " (٢)، ،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a child was born to an Ansari. He wanted to name him Muhammad. We said to him, "We will not allow you to do this until we ask the Prophet (ﷺ)." So he placed his son on his shoulder and came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and inquired. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You may name him with my name, but do not use my kunyah for your kunyah."
