حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، وَمُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ: " أَيَّ حِينٍ تُوتِرُ؟ " قَالَ: أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ، بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ، قَالَ: " فَأَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ؟ " قَالَ: آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالْوُثْقَى، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالْقُوَّةِ " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (ﷺ) asked Abu Bakr As-Siddiq when he performed the Witr prayer. He replied: After the Isha prayer, in the first part of the night. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked the same question to Umar, and he replied: In the last part of the night. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Abu Bakr, you have preferred the aspect in which there is certainty, and Umar, you have preferred the aspect in which there is strength.
