It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that among the Jews, when a woman was menstruating, they would neither eat nor drink with her, nor would they stay together in the same house. The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about this, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you about menstruating women. Say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are purified." After reciting this verse in full, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "You may do everything except intercourse." When the Jews learned of this, they said: "This man opposes us in every matter." Then Usayd bin Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abbad bin Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! The Jews are saying such and such things. Should we not even go near our wives? (So that we may completely oppose the Jews.)" Upon hearing this, the color of the blessed face of the Prophet (ﷺ) changed, and we thought that the Prophet (ﷺ) was displeased with them. Both of them also left from there, but shortly after, a gift of milk was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), so the Prophet (ﷺ) called both of them and gave it to them to drink. In this way, they understood that the Prophet (ﷺ) was not displeased with them.
