حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، (٢) عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: مُرَّ بِجِنَازَةٍ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: " أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهَا " (٣) ، فَقَالُوا: كَانَ مَا عَلِمْنَا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، وَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا، فَقَالَ: " وَجَبَتْ ". ثُمَّ مُرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى، فَقَالَ: " أَثْنُوا عَلَيْهَا "، فَقَالُوا: بِئْسَ الْمَرْءُ كَانَ فِي دِينِ اللهِ، فَقَالَ: " وَجَبَتْ، أَنْتُمْ شُهُودُ (٤) اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ " (٥)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed in front of the Prophet (ﷺ). Someone praised the deceased, then several people praised him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed and people criticized the deceased, and seeing them, many others also criticized him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has become obligatory. You are Allah's witnesses on earth."
