Original Arabic
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: مُرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (١) بِجِنَازَةٍ فَأَثْنَى الْقَوْمُ خَيْرًا فَقَالَ: " وَجَبَتْ ". ثُمَّ مُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا، فَقَالَ: " وَجَبَتْ ". فَقَالُوا: قُلْتَ: لِهَذَا: " وَجَبَتْ "، وَلِهَذَا: " وَجَبَتْ "؟ قَالَ: " شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ، وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed by in front of the Prophet (ﷺ). Someone praised the deceased, and the people praised him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It has become obligatory." The people asked, "You said 'It has become obligatory' for both; what is the reason for this?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "This is the testimony of the people, and the Muslims are Allah's witnesses on earth."
