Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed in front of the Prophet (ﷺ), and someone praised the deceased, and the people praised him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said three times, "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed, and the people spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (ﷺ) again said three times, "It has become obligatory." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "May my parents be sacrificed for you! When the first funeral passed and the people praised the deceased, you said three times, 'It has become obligatory,' and when the second funeral passed and the people spoke ill of the deceased, you again said three times, 'It has become obligatory'?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever you praise, Paradise becomes obligatory for him, and whoever you speak ill of, Hell becomes obligatory for him." Then he said three times, "You are Allah's witnesses on earth."
