English translation

Bishr bin Harb says that once Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have come to know that you pledged allegiance to two leaders before there was consensus on one leader?" He replied, "Yes! I pledged allegiance to Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), then the people of Syria came and dragged me to the army of Ibn Dillah, so I was compelled to pledge allegiance to him as well." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "This is exactly what I fear (he said it twice)." Then Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abdur Rahman! Did you not hear the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ) that whoever has the ability that no sleep passes, no morning or evening comes upon him except that he has a ruler over him, then he should do so?" He replied, "Yes! I have heard it, but I dislike pledging allegiance to two leaders before there is consensus on one leader among the people."
